iFlashback! June 30th, 2004

It’s time for an iFlashback, a weekly feature in which we take a look at some comics that were on sale nine years ago.  Why nine and not ten? Our Mondays and Wednesdays used to sync up, but 2004 was a leap year so we are off by a day. Jog down memory lane with me. The date is June 30th, 2004 the number one film at the box office is Fahrenheit 9/11  and these are some of the books that are on the stands at your local comic shop.

That was the week that was in comics. Some interesting debuts here. We have a new number one for Doom Patrol (one of my favorite teams) Amazing Fantasy and Sleeper. So, did you read any of the books that came out this week? If you did be sure to let us know what you thought of them.

Comments

  1. I only read the “Batgirl” and “Doom Patrol”. Batgirl was fun, but I was disappointed with Byrne’s Doom Patrol.

    • I was so put off by the Byrne-penned Circle JLA storyline that led into this Doom Patrol series that I opted out.

  2. the first three or four story-arks of ultimate fantastic four were actually pretty good. and immonen on art is always a plus 😉

  3. I think Ultimate FF was it for me. I liked the early Ultimate FF stuff, but lost interest I think around the time Namor showed up.

I remember being interested in Powerless, but I didn’t get it for some reason. I still need to get and read Sleeper.

    • Sleeper is defnitely worth checking out. I just re-read it a few weeks ago and it’s still some of the best Brubaker stuff I’ve read (and he’s one of my favorites, so that’s saying a lot).

  4. Looks like a good week, but the only thing I was reading at that time was Ultimate Fantastic Four. It was the weakest book I was reading then, and I kept toying with dropping it, but it was still a good series. Somehow or another, I ended up with nearly an entire run.

  5. Lots of Doom in the titles from that week, it seems..

  6. X-Statix!!! I loved this book. Read this and Sleeper. Remember passing on this iteration of Doom Patrol.

  7. Ultimate FF is the only one I’ve read. I remember thinking it was alright. Always more of an Ultimates and Ultimate Spidey fan.

Wonder Woman’s hair on the JLA cover looks like she just got out of the shower. Weird.

  8. Robin looks much less awkward than in last week’s cover.

I read Ultimate FF, and I think the second issue of Amazing Fantasy with Arana. I don’t remember why I picked it up. I think because I thought it was a boy on the cover. I ended up picking up another issue tho after that. I usually find lead female characters annoying but I thought Arana was cool and had an interesting story. Very little superheroics but kind of a fun read.

Was Powerless any good? It looks really interesting.

  9. For me it was X-statix, Sleeper, Powerless and JLA of course.
I have to admit… Haven’t finished reading Sleeper. I own the whole run, but was bored to sleep by the halfway mark. I normally like Brubaker, but sometimes he bores me soooooooo much.
    Maybe someday.

  10. Reading through X-Statix for the first time now and enjoying it quite a bit. As I remember it, Powerless was a very fun Marvel Elseworlds type book. Kinda makes me want to go back and read it again.

  11. I’ve only read sleeper, but man, do i love this book!

  12. I so badly wanted Powerless to be something, but it was nuh-thing.

  13. Is Caper a story about Greg Rucka and Jim McCann on the run from the mob?

  14. Avatar photo Jeff Reid (@JeffRReid) says:

Araña was a pretty neat character. I seem to recall that her comics were only collected in digest form, but I liked them when I read them.

  15. I actually didn’t get any of these books. Also, I miss the days when John Byrne was making comics people read 🙁

  16. Yet more titles I need to check out during NYCC. Caper, Powerless, and Amazing Fantasy look pretty interesting even if seeing the comics they weren’t highly regarded.

Here are some other big events, births, and deaths to happen on June 30th:

    Events
-1908: A small asteroid explodes over the Tunguska River in Russia, flatting a 770mi radius of a forest and was 1,000x more powerful than the Atomic Bomb at Hiroshima.

    Births
    -1944: Terry Funk
    -1966: Mike Tyson

    Deaths
    -2003: Buddy Hackett

  17. Ah X-Statix, still such a special series. Glad they went out with a bang…

  18. Isn’t X-Statix getting an omnibus soon?
