iFlashback! February 11th, 2004

It’s time for an iFlashback! A weekly feature in which we take a look at some comics that were on sale nine years ago. Why nine years and not ten? Well because our Mondays in 2013 sync up with the Wednesdays of 2004.

So jog down memory lane with me. The date is February 11th, 2004. The number one film at the box office is Barbershop 2 and these are some of the books at your local comic shop.

That was the week that was in comics. Robert Kirkman was writing Sleepwalker in the short lived Epic Imprint from Marvel. I think that is pretty cool. Also, Marvel Knights 4 was the book in which the Fantastic Four goes bankrupt and has to get real jobs. A lot of interesting titles out this week, did you read any of them? If you did be sure to let us know what you thought!

Comments

  1. 4 was a great book at the beginning. I liked how Marvel was giving some of their mainstream heroes the MK treatment at the time.

    • I loved the first 2 books in that series, I’ve been trying to track down the rest but no luck. Mark Miller’s MK Spider-Man run was pretty cool too.

  2. Wow, I remember buying Turner’s complete Godfall arc, including sketch variants, and I still don’t think I ever read it. I should get on that soon.

  3. I remember that being Steve McNiven’s first work at Marvel. And I LOVED IT! That guy is amazing. And H.E.R.O still stands as one of my favorite books of all time. Good times!

  4. This week makes me sad. I miss Hester and Parks. Those guys were absolutely phenomenal together.

  5. Kelly’s Superman was a strange beast… I remember being impressed with parts of it, and bored to tears by others.

Not sure why, but that GA cover is one of my favorites. Something about Ollie vs. The Riddler was so interesting…

  6. You want to talk about a comic buried treasure, you guys should definitely look up the H.E.R.O. series by Pfiefer. It was friggin’ phenomenal. I wish DC would rer-elease it, at least digitally

    • Wasn’t there something in that series about the main character’s best friend date-raping him? I didn’t read the whole series or even that particular issue, but I remember that specific page. Geoff Johns raves about it tho so I’d be willing to give it a try.

    • H.E.R.O. is one of the best books I think I’ve ever read. Just really great, worth tracking down.

  7. Pity that Epic Anthology was a dumping ground for the remnant of EPIC. All three stories were intriguing and I would have like to see more of them.

  8. Of these, I read:

Superman/Action arc. Man that Turner art was gorgeous (R.I.P.). I enjoyed this.

Stormwatch: Team Achilles is another book I really loved. I like good military books, and this was that plus a bunch of other crazy stuff. The Project Entry Universe stuff alone made this worth it. Great characterization. The final issue was never published, but you can read the script online.

    H.E.R.O. – see above.

Green Arrow – Remember when GA was actually good? It was really good. Hopefully we’re entering a new Renaissance for Ollie.

  9. Man I miss that Marvel Knights header.

  10. It goes without saying I read that GA issue. A lot of people seem keen on HERO. I know my LCS has a trade for 1/2 price maybe I’ll grab it next time.

  11. MK 4 was a great starting point for new F4 readers and the art was amazing.

  12. Since getting into DIAL H I really have wanted to go back and read the previous run at a Dial H for Hero series. Good thing I’m reading all of these comments here on how good it was. This series has made me very broke Timmy since I will be diving into bins come NYCC time.

Here are some other big events to occur on February 11th:

-1990: Nelson Mandela is released from prison after 27 years.
-2012: Pope Benedict XVI resigns citing health issues. He is the first man to resign as Pope since Pope Gregory XII in 1415.

  13. I liked some of the CrossGen stuff, however I never read Abadazad. Pity they had to shut down.

  14. I love that Action Comics cover, Supes on a Tron bike in his home world. Sleepwalker never looked better and missed the epic line, short lived is right. Epic like DHP & the recently cancelled DCU Presents, anthology issues like these are fun and a great way to introduce new characters or spotlight ones we don’t see enough, all while keeping it fresh by rotating story arcs every few issues. The last Black Lightning/Blue Devil DCU arc was refreshingly different from the New52 cause it felt like the DCU I love. I didn’t read any of these books 9 years ago except Marvel Knights FF and McNiven can draw all Marvel characters beautifully.
