Heads Up: Marvel Previews – November 2012

Being a comic fan can be tough. With so many publishers printing more and more books, canceling titles and starting new ones, it can be daunting when you head to the comic book shop on a Wednesday to know exactly what’s coming out.

The current system of presenting and ordering comics three months ahead of their release as set forth by the sole comics distributor, Diamond Comics, doesn’t make it any easier either. We’re not a fan of that system, we think it’s slowly strangling comics to death, but we realize it’s a harsh reality of how the industry works and we definitely don’t want you to miss out on any of the cool comics being published.

And so, as opposed to regurgitating the list of comics solicited in Previews each month, we present to you some of the highlights of things you probably won’t want to miss out on.

SPOILER WARNING in order to get people to order comics, the publishers have a funny habit of revealing what’s happening in the books. If you don’t want anything at all to be spoiled, then you’ll probably want to skip this post and take your chances with your pre-orders and/or your shopping.

Marvel already released hardcover and paperback collections of the first six issues in Mark Waid, Paolo Rivera and Marcos Martin’s critically acclaimed Daredevil run, but many of us have been holding out for something a little more deluxe. It’s not an omnibus exactly, but this oversized volume is twice the length of the original with six additional issues.

Comments

  1. Looking forward to Deadpool, and the All New X-men,,others don’t interest me

  2. FF!

  3. I think the NOW concept itself is silly, but I’m actually looking forward to reading quite a few of those titles.

Still I was hoping that from NOW on Marvel would stop double shipping and stabilize art teams. Alas, that doesn’t seem the case.

I’m tempted by Thor but I can’t stop wondering how long Ribic will be on it.

  4. Definitely going to be picking up Iron Man, Fantastic Four and FF. I will probably pick p Captain America as well. I haven’t read hat title in almost ten years, but this new take sounds great to me.

  5. Some mighty pretty covers happening here. I can’t wait to gaze upon some Immonen art once more with ANX.

  6. I’m picking up Uncanny Avengers, All new Xmen, Xmen Legacy and Iron Man I think.

  7. Does anyone know if A+X is ongoing or a limited series?

  8. Gonna give them all a shot. It’s sad to see Bendis leave the avengers, but what the hell?! Bendis on the x-men? Remender doing Cap!? It’s gonna be awesome! OR NOT! But I’m loving the changing of seats on marvel.

  9. Looking forward to all of these except X-Men Legacy. Pretty excited for how epic Uncanny Avengers could be.

  10. I guess I might start picking up Deadpool again since it doesn’t suffer from “Marvel pricing.”

  11. UGHHHH I don’t have the money for this Marvel!!!

    • Tell me about it. I’m already getting 18 titles. And I want to add 6 more this fall. I’m going to have to drop something, but I don’t know what!!

    • same thing I get 19 books subscribed and 6 others trying two cut some but I want hulk 2 mark waids my 3rd favorite writer love daredevil.

  12. In for Deadpool.

I think I’m in for Uncanny Avengers because I ordered #1 already. I might choose this time to stop reading Iron Man – I enjoyed Fraction’s run, but don’t think I’ll continue – but damn I liked Kieron Gillen on SWORD.

All New X-Men might be interesting.

Fantastic Four and FF sound interesting – especially Allred – but I don’t know – She-Thing? WTF?

  13. Where are Nova and Rocket Raccoon going to fall in? My guess is Captain America? Fabtastic Four? Both?

  14. Man, it’s easier to list what I’m not getting than what I am.

They got me with Deadpool god dammit. I’m not into the writers much, and yes I know the whole comedian thing… but Tony fucking Moore cannot be passed up.

Similar situation with Fraction’s books. That first issue of Hawkeye was great too. Might have to give both of those books a shot.

I’m into all the Aaron, Remender, Waid and Gillen goodness. Might even have to try that Bendis book, damn him. Immonen is just too good.

    • Between the artist and writers, everyone I’m iffy on is paired with someone I can’t pass up. This is either a great move on their part or it will lead to some mass ejector seat style bailing.

  15. I’m all for a lot of these titles and I’m genuinely excited for them but I’m getting really tired of Marvel shoving two books a month on a title at $3.99 per issue at us.
I would love to try some of these other books like Thor and FF but I can’t afford it!

    I already plan on getting:
    Uncanny Avengers
    All New X-Men
    Iron Man
    X-Men Legacy
    Deadpool (2.99)

which are shipping twice a month, that’s already $37.90 per month on just 5 titles!
That doesn’t include the other comics from Marvel, DC, Image, etc that’s on my pull list.
I think this kind of pricing and twice a month shipping kills experimentation.
I think while it may be profitable for Marvel right NOW, in the long run it’ll hurt comics.
This forces a decision on people with a budget.
Do I drop Marvel comics or do I just stick with what I know and not try out something new?

    • Avatar photo filippod (@filippodee) says:

Yeah, the double shipping is crazy and I think (and I hope) that it is ultimately backfiring for Marvel.

At the very least they are cannibalizing their own second tier titles (which is frustrating because they are often very good) but I also believe they are sending away fans in frustration.

My pull list has gone crazy with double shipping and I must cut on my Marvel titles. Which I hate because I love them all.

Basically in a LCS subscription 2 Marvel titles count as 3 non Marvel titles of the same price. In a year it’s CRAZY money.

For me Marvel NOW will be a painful exercise in cutting books.

My impression is that Marvel are short sightedly trying to keep afloat in the #1 race with DC

  16. Who’s that behind the modern team on the All-New X-Men cover? Rachel? Hope?

  17. FF, Fantastic Four, and Journey into Mystery for me. Maybe Uncanny Avengers. I’m so-so on all the others, and since they have a $3.99 price point, that makes the decision for me.

  18. Damn. Greg Land really traced the hell out of that poster for Iron Man 2.

  19. That Hulk cover is horrendous.

  20. I thought they were going to just have one new #1 each week? This says they’ll be releasing TEN #1s over the course of a month. What a needlessly complicated clusterfuck. Just start all the titles over at #1.

  21. Totally on board, will pull for at least the first arc:

Uncanny Avengers (for characters and writer)
    Iron Man (for writer)
    Deadpool (for writer)

On the fence, will pull at least first issue:

Captain America (like the writer but not the character)
FF (like the concept and the artist but not the writer)
X-Men Legacy (concept sounds interesting but I know nothing of the writer, very little background knowledge of the character)
Journey into Mystery (potentially interesting concept)

Everything else, I pretty much don’t like the writer and am indifferent to the characters.

  22. Captain America’s left leg seems to be broken if you look at the cover. Not going so far as to say Romita Jr. is ‘bad’, but I’ve noticed his anatomy in recent titles have been very inconsistent.
