EXCLUSIVE PREVIEW: Flashpoint – Frankenstein and the Creatures of the Unknown #1

FLASHPOINT: FRANKENSTEIN AND THE CREATURES OF THE UNKNOWN #1 As the world of DC Comics continues to evolve and change with the massive summer event, Flashpoint, we're slowly getting more and more glimpses of the world of Flashpoint through the numerous tie-in mini-series.  With so many to choose from, it's hard to ientify which ones will be worth your $2.99, but usually it's a safe bet to go with the creators you know and appreciate, and in the case of Flashpoint: Frankenstein and the Creatures of the Unknown, with Jeff Lemire writing it, it's a pretty safe bet that it will be worth picking up.

Luckily, the folks at DC Comics validated that assumption today by providing us with an exclusive preview of the first 5 pages of Flashpoint: Frankenstein and the Creatures of the Unknown #1, written by Lemire with art by Ibraim Roberson.

Following the legacy of the Frankenstein monster in both literature and the DC Universe (most recently by Grant Morrison and Doug Mahnke in Seven Soldiers a few years ago), in the world of Flashpoint, Frankenstein is a badass soldier.  The first issue introduces us to this incarnation of Frankenstein and the weird war tales that follow him.

Recently on the DC Comics blog, when asked about the character and how he was approaching it, Lemire explained, "This Frankenstein is a total badass. An unstoppable, unkillable machine of destruction. But inside is the romantic heart of a poet."

Given Lemire's history with the Essex County trilogy and currently with his Vertigo series Sweet Tooth, we know that Lemire is able to deliver personality and emotion, and with his recent DCU work such as Superboy, we've seen that personality be combined with action and excitement.  If you check out the preview pages below, I think you'll see that Lemire is primed again with Flashpoint: Frankenstein and the Creatures of the Unknown.

Flashpoint: Frankenstein and the Creatures of the Unknown #1 is 32 pages and in stores on June 8, 2011 for $2.99

Comments

  1. Jeff Lemire… I’m there.

Not really into the Creatures but this looks pretty neat.

  2. I like Frankenstein and I like Mr. Lemire.

    I’m in.

  3. So….what makes this a Flashpoint book?

I’m sorry but this just looks like a Frankenstein title just put into WWII. I’m not a 100% clear on DCU Frankenstein but what was stopping him from fighting in WWII?

Also, the art is pretty so-so for me and way too much of an info dump in the preview. No thanks.

  4. I am so happy I took a chance and pre-ordered this! It looks AMAZING!

  5. @TheNextChampion  >I’m not a 100% clear on DCU Frankenstein but what was stopping him from fighting in WWII?

    Ice, apparently.

  6. Like the writing style, easy to understand unlike some writers like Grant Morrison who insist on “writing” without enough words to explain what is going on! Jeff Lemire has no such problams for me.

  7. Who’d ever thought of paying attention while reading?

  8. I believe the original Frank was on ice thru WW2 and another one was part of the creature commandos. Flashpoint has the original still active. Anyway, Ive wanted more frankenstein books since the fantastic stuff in seven soldiers so I’m stoked about this, even more so after seeing this art.

  9. All over this.  I loved seeing Alaska as “The Land of the Undead” on the map in Flashpoint #2.

  10. “And where evil walks…Frankenstein LIVES!”    I am ALL over this!!

  11. @AlanRob  hell yeah!

  12. Avatar photo Paul Montgomery (@fuzzytypewriter) says:

I am slathered all over this. Sold.

  13. It’s amazing how many people seem to not get what this sequence is alluding to. (The actual novel!)

  14. Anyone remember ‘Doc Frankenstein?’ That book was awesome(& awesomely late, but still).

  15. This book looks awesome and I will definitely be giving it a try. Reminds me some of the old Marvel horror books like Werewolf by Night or Tomb of Dracula.

  16. Looks great. Hope there’s some Morrison in it. Will buy it anyway.

  17. @Rhymer  Yeah, cause only Morrison is a decent writer. Dont buy the book unless it has a “BIG” name attached to it….

  18. This looks pretty awesome, I’ll get at least the first issue. There’s something about Frankenstein that I just always need to read

  19. I adore Sweet Tooth… not a fan of Superboy at all – but is it still worth checking out?
