Conner, Palmiotti, and Gray off Power Girl

Fans of Power Girl get three more issues with the current creative team.  Amanda Conner was due to come off the book after issue #12, and co-writers Jimmy Palmiotti and Justin Gray decided to pack it in as well.

"Amanda always said she could just commit to the book for a year, and as we got into the series we realized that we just couldn't do the same type of book with another artist at this point and decided it was a good idea to leave with her and give another team a shot."

The new team is expected to be announced in the next week.

It's too bad, because I'd heard nothing but good things about this book, and it's just the kind of book the industry needs, and it would have been cool to have a nice long run.  That being said, a great run of 12 issues is no small thing, and it's a credit to the creative team that the book lasted this long.

Issue #10 comes out later this month.

  1. That is unfortunate.  Any word on when the first trade is coming out?

I’m absolutely heartbroken, but grateful for the great run. I intend to give the new team a shot because everybody deserves a chance, but it’s difficult to imagine anybody recapturing everything that’s so special about this initial run.

  3. Aww man

@stuclach – The first trade is due out April 14th.

  5. Amanda Conner’s version of powergirl is the best. She draws this character perfectly, powergirl appears in other titles and she looks awful, Conner’s version is the most consistent and has the best hair style and design.

This is sad, this book will be dropped if their is a poor creative team.

  6. Wow, that sucks. I have a sinking feeling this book is going to come crashing down shortly after they all leave it. I hope thats not the case and I’ll give the new team a try, but I just have a bad feeling.

  7. My partner just pointed out that one of her breasts is almost as big as his head..

  8. @PaulMontgomery – My thoughts exactly. I’ll give the new team a chance, but I don’t see how it could be as fun as this run has been.

  9. Aww, I don’t like hearing that. It’ll be hard for another team to capture the magic these three made with PG.  Time to savor the next three issues.

  10. Aww dammit! I just started picking this up!

  11. If anything, I’m glad that this series isn’t being cancelled because of low sales. If anything, this run was a ray of sunshine and proof that this type of fun & quirky book can be highly successful. Also, I think it helped raise Amanda Conner’s profile quite a bit, and to see her on more projects would be a dream come true.

  12. It has been an awesome run. One of my favorite series. But I am not sad because it was not canceled, the artists chose to leave it by their own accord.

  13. I just started picking this up, too.  Lame news.

  14. That sucks. I never read this book, but have always been somewhat intrigued by it. The ways its supporters talked it up seemed interesting. This really seemed to be a high-quality run that was bringing something a little different to the superhero genre.

That said, yeah, I think it should be emphasized that getting a 12-issue run of Power Girl, with the same creators on every issue, in 2009-2010, is no small thing. This definitely counts as a success.

  15. NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! Oh well, at least we get 12 issues.

  16. Sad, but y’know… 12 Issues of consistently great comics is more than you can ask for today. Fantastic work from all three creators. I’ll gladly be double dipping on the trades for this. (12 issue Deluxe Edition, please, pretty please? Let’s all tweet the DC honchos!). I’m willing to give another creative team a chance unless it’s someone whose work I just don’t care for. I’ll definitely miss the magic of Amanda’s art with the larger-than-life personality of PeeGee.

  17. DAMN!!! I just got on this book too. *sigh* well I’ll definitly give the next team a shot, I just hope they keep with the fun tone that Palmiotti/Gray/Conner have created.

  18. (multiple expletives deleted)

It has been a really fun run.  I hope whoever they bring in manages to keep the tone that has been established so far.

I’ll be curious to see what Palmiotti/Gray and Conner will do after this.  Amanda Conner should be in line for something really big.

  19. @Paul – Thank you, sir.  I plan on picking it up.

  20. You all summed it up nicely.

I’m off this book with them unless they bring in a good writer to follow.

Anyone who hasn’t, neesd to check out Jonah Hex.

  21. I just picked this up too and now I’m a bit bummed. Oh well. I too, will give the new team a shot.

  22. Gnashing of teeth. GNASHING!

  23. Power girl no more…..sad

  24. Awww, this has been a good run.

  25. The new team has some big shoes to fill.  This has been a fantastic book, easily one of my top 5 anticipated books each month.  I’m also heartbroken about this news, but also excited to see who else is coming on!

  26. i have a feeling the whole style of the book is going to change, and not for the better. but i’ll reserve judgment until the new team is announced, maybe i’ll keep picking it up.

  27. First Red Robin and now Power Girl? My wallet is happy, but I am not.

  28. Crap, I really liked Amanda Conner’s art too. At least we got 12 good issues. I know that 10,11,and 12 will be good.

  29. DAMNITTTTTTTT, DAMNITTTTT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Matthew

  30. god help us all

  31. Well at least they laid the foundation. I think with the right team this could continue to be good.

  32. Really. Sucky.  News.  But hopefully this means these creators will be able to do something new together or a part that’s just as special.  I love, love this book.  It will be nice to have the 12 issue run though.  It will make a really great 2 trade set.

  33. I didn’t pick this up in single issues. Since Palmiotti and Conners are leaving I’ll buy the trade.

  34. Sad to hear. Still waiting for the first trade (there’s ya problem), but I’m glad to hear it is not cancelled.

I think @comicbookchris is making a lot of sense. It is a good sign that a new creative team is on board for the series. Cause it means DC is committed to keep this series going even without it’s original creators.

  35. Gail Simone + PG looks like a natural match.

  36. I’m still waiting for the trade, but this does upset me a teensy bit. That’s quite a team they’ve got leaving, here’s hoping the new guys can maintain the quality level.

  37. When this first came out, I didn’t pick it up because I wasn’t loving Conner’s art, but after reading the Supergirl story in Wednesday Comics, I went back and picked up the back issues and have been loving it ever since.

I will probably decide if I’m gonna continue with the book when they announce the new team.  But this has been one of the best books coming out the last 6 months.

  38. Everytime I got a new issue and enjoyed it, I just kind of expected this kind of news. There’s now way something this good was going to continue in it’s current form, it’s my curse I guess.

  39. No!!!!  This is sad news, I find it hard to believe this book will continue to be as good without this team, hopefully I’m wrong and I"ll certainly give the new team a chance, but I don’t have a good feeling about this 🙁

  40. What a shame.  This will be my jumping off point.

  41. I’ll give the new team a shot. If it is not as good, as least we have a nice 12 issue run.

  42. NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!

    *Takes a deep breath*

    NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!

  43. Crap, crap, crap, crap, crap!!!!

The new team has a lot to live up to.

  44. KHAAAAAN!!!!

    uh I mean

    NOOOO!!!!

I hope they put the 12 in a good hardcover package. I’d buy it again.

  45. I’ve never read this so I ask you fans of the series.

Would you guys rather have Palmiotti/Gray stay on the title and Connor leaves? Or have Connor stay and Palmiotti/Gray leave? Like what makes this book for you? The art or the writing.

  46. Avatar photo Paul Montgomery (@fuzzytypewriter) says:

    Yes.

  47. I totally respect the whole team leaving.

But I’d continue to buy this series if Palmiotti & Gray stayed.

Art is never enough for me to buy a book.

  48. I’m staying. I will say though that its the combination of all the people that make this book, including the artists that are doing the colouring, inks and lettering (call back to the last show). There is so much story told through varying levels of detail and expression that the artists Amanda, et al tell almost as much and in some panels more then what was probably written.

I hope they can all dabble there toes in PG land again some day.

  49. sad news! love this book!

  50. bummer.  And I just picked up my first Power Girl issue yesterday and loved it.

  51. whither goest amanda goest i; she’s soo good; interested to see who they get to replace the team on pg; I expect it’s going to be just business-as-usual talent (e.g.: ramon bachs and matthew sturges) — but please DC, prove me wrong

  52. I read a rumor that Alison Bechdel is taking over.

  53. Bechdel seems unlikely, but I’d totally read that book.

  54. Unlikely doesn’t begin to cover it.

  55. The alleged team is Bechdel/Bryne.

  56. John Byrne?

Where in the world did you hear that?
