Breaking news out of today’s Disney Investors Press Call.
Slash Film is reporting that Joss Whedon will return to write and direct the sequel to Marvel’s The Avengers. For now, let’s call it Marvel’s The Avengers 2.
There’s no date yet, but Marvel Studios has plenty to work on in the coming years with Iron Man 3 hitting in May of next year and Thor: The Dark World touching down that November. Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Guardians of the Galaxy follow in 2014. And somewhere in there, we’re likely to see Edgar Wright’s Ant Man.
Meanwhile, Whedon is also developing a live action television series set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe for ABC. Hmmm….
Now it’s time for a celebratory shawarma run.
Without adjusting for inflation Marvel’s The Avengers is the third highest grossing film of all time with $1,461,368,487.
I’m going to call MoviePhone RIGHT NOW!
This should re-affirm my belief in humanity, but I’m disturbed that there was even a possibility that he wouldn’t!
I believe he said in interviews following the Avengers that he wasn’t sure he was going to follow up with the sequel.
I had no idea there was a chance he wouldn’t.
any ideas of what that television series might focus on? i’d put a bet on it being a SHIELD based project?
YES! YES! A TRILLION TIMES YES!!!!! 😀
Good news.
Well this is one that we will all be seeing.
Great news! I really can’t imagine anyone replacing him for the sequel. Plus, since it is a while away, hopefully we’ll see some more of his own stuff in the interim as well.
@%&#in’ Awesome! (yup… that about wraps it up.)
Eh, that’s okay. I really didn’t like the avengers. Then later i found out i didn’t like much of anything he does. But if it makes you guys happy then i’m happy. Seriously, no thanks.
Marvel actual has rights for ALL their characters for TV, right?
So why not a live action X-Men show run by Whedon?
Please don’t get my hopes up I’d die of happiness but I think they movie studios actually have the rights to television as well.
@Jdudley I believe you are correct about the TV rights. I only say that because the Fantastic Four made an appearance on the Avengers cartoon. Live action might be a whole different story though.

AHHHHHHH I’M SO EXCITED! I JUST CAN’T HIDE IT!
I’d be more shocked if this WASN’T the case.
Also, the Avengers universe TV show apparently is going to be a Cop show….So it’s a lot like Gotham Central I guess. But hey, if WB won’t make their own version of GCPD then I’ll have a Marvel knock off.
Or perhaps a super cop show? Such as Power-man and Iron Fist?
OMG if they actually made Gotham Centrail I’d shit myself.
I couldn’t be more excited about this.
This has to be the first Phase 3 movie of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, or maybe the final of Phase 2 and they just haven’t announced it as such yet?
I had a bad day at work then I go to check out iFanboy and BAM!
Day saved.
Great Odin’s beard, that’s good news, I don’t see anyone else capable of raising the bar by going further in the cosmic direction.
I’d love to see a Daredevil tv show with Whedon as show-runner (excuse me, I need to sit down…..)
I bet he only said he might not do it so he could negotiate a better deal with Disney, more money/freedom.
good for him and good for us.
Smart and likely observation.
I hope the TV show he is working on is Alias. The idea of Whedon having any part of writing Jessica Jones sounds perfect to me.
Totally agree
Yes.
I’m okay with this.
Disappointed to learn this is the only use of the ‘Fuck You Money’ tag, my favourite iFanboy tag.
I still need to see the first one. Why am I so bad at seeing movies?
Awesomesauce to the max, Joss is the boss.
I still have not seen the first one yet. Or Batman. Or anything. I guess that’s what a 10 month old does to you.
Your devotion to said 10 month old does you credit, sir – hang in there!
Let’s hope he pulls a Nolan on this and make it a hat-trick trilogy! 🙂
