‘Arrow’ – S01E05 – “Damaged”

The other DC characters are coming in fast and furious!

Here’s how “Damaged” is described:

After Detective Lance (Paul Blackthorne) arrests Oliver (Stephen Amell) for murder, Oliver tells Moira (Susanna Thompson) the only lawyer he’ll allow to represent him is Laurel (Katie Cassidy). Laurel takes the case, which puts her at odds with her father. Oliver offers to take a polygraph in front Detective Lance, but things get tense when Lance asks him if anyone else was on the island with him. Oliver flashes back to when he got his first scar, courtesy of Deathstroke (guest star Jeffrey Robinson).

I look forward to your thoughts, opinions, gripes, live-blogging, etc.

  1. Wow “you know how us billionaire vigilantes love our toys”…can we make Ollie more Bruce Wayne-ish! It’s like we have a batman show, but it’s called Arrow. And it somehow is working just fine for me.

    • Oh, they definitely been using Green Arrow as the “well, we can’t do Batman, so…” character.

    • I agree Conor, but I also feel as though DC has been doing that in comics with this character for years.

I’ve always been a Green Arrow fan especially after the old Green Lantern/Green Arrow cross over title when they made him “the peoples voice” but he’s always been sorta looked upon as Batman light unfortunately because of the similarities between the two.

    • @Dean B.: Oh, Green Arrow’s been a Batman knock-off from the very beginning. It was very apparent when he was first created as the orphaned super rich guy with his teenage sidekick, Arrowmobile, Arrowcave, and clown-themed arch-nemesis. Nothing wrong with it, ultimately

    • @Conner.: Yeah, he definitely has been. You’ll get no argument from me at all. I’ve just always felt he could be much much more, ya know? That’s one of the reasons I’ve been digging this show since it’s premier actually (even if it is very Batman-esque as well). It’s also a major reason I’m really looking forward to Jeff Lemire’s take on the character that’s coming out-

If ever there was a hero from the DCU that deserved a reboot or re-imagining it’s Oliver Queen.

    • I like the Denny O’Neil/Hippie Green Arrow as well, and I think it’s possible Arrow could move in that direction. While admittedly, Green Arrow in his original incarnation was a Batman ripoff using Green Arrow gives the writers freedom to tell Batman-like stories without the baggage or the nerd rage. You wouldn’t get the family aspect of the story with Batman which I am kind of enjoying.

    • Lemire and Sorrentino on Green Arrow is mucho welcomed and bout time since this New52 mixed bag, that announcement made me anxious as I’m digging the show much more than I expected and the Batman similarities are left at billionaire playboy with gadgets hero for me, other than that Ollie never reads like a Bat book to me but dig the obvious bat tone to Arrow and that “you know how us billionaire vigilantes love our toys” line was a nice nod to acknowledging the bat-esque tone, I laughed.

  2. And i had a geek moment, goose bumps when Slade walked into the tent. Oh what a time we live in…

  3. That episode was awesome! Love this series. My wife loves it too!

  4. I really enjoyed this episode BUT I wish they had used Deathstroke a bit differently. I wish that he had been a bit more cunning and not just the silent muscle. They should have just combined him with the guy running the operation on the island, that would have been more interesting. In fact, at first I thought that WAS Deathstroke without his mask on. Oh well. He did look great, though. (Although I felt like he moved kind of stiffly.)

  5. I didn’t like Deathstroke’s mask at all, looked too latex-y. Should have gone with a metallic helmet instead

  6. I love picking up on all the extra nods they tossed in. The guy running the operation on the island identified himself as Edward Fyers and of course Laurel’s reference to her fishnets. The guy playing Detective Lance, really looks like he could play an older Merlyn in my opinion. If he grew out some chin hair of his own, he would be the spitting image right out of the comics.

  7. I’m assuming the fact that we saw the Arrow through the Mask in Ep 1 and Deathstroke had both eyes in this Ep means that Ollie shoots his eye out at some point?

Loved the Fishnets comment (Although I doubt she’ll ever where them in the show…I expect an outfit similar to he early BoP One.

Eddie Fyars was cool but disappointing that he’s a Villain…always liked him as an Anti-Hero but I guess Diggle is filling that Role.

    • I was wondering if they are going to do something with Deathstrokes eye since in the show he has two right now. Still loving the show.

  8. Another great episode. I had no idea before last week that John Barrowman was going to be on this show, I have to say his inclusion is pretty awesome for me.

  9. From Deadline:

The CW’s freshman Arrow (3.7 million viewers, 1.3/4 in 18-49, 1.0/3 in 18-34) continues to impress, drawing its largest audience since the premiere and matching its series high in 18-49. Week-to-week, the superhero drama is up 21% in total viewers, 30% in adults 18-49 and 43% in adults 18-34.

  10. Really fun episode. The action continues to impress. They are doing some great choreography and cinematography, and throwing in a nice amount of action. The draw continues to be these characters and the mysteries they are hinting at. definately intrigued at this point. I enjoyed the “toys” and “fishnets” references as well.

I haven’t followed GA via comics in a long time. Is Diggle a comic character? If not, I anticipate a Coulson-like appearance soon. He’s great.

  11. You guys catch the Manhunter reference? 🙂

  12. @conor, the name Andrew Diggle was on the chest of Deadshot and is the name of Dig’s dead brother as well.

  13. Thanks for doing these Conor as well as the Green Lantern, Young Justicce, and Avengers TV shows I enjoy them. Just wondered, why you don’t do the new TMNT show? it’s really good I love it! anybody see it yet?
