While I was dissapointed that Nightcrawler was killed in the last Second Coming issue, I thought Kyle and Yost handled the death really well, and made it important.  It’s a shame the eulogy had to land in a Matt Fraction book.

Dodson’s art is awful, as usual.  The colors (which I realize are not his fault) are way too glossy, and the faces are just drawn very poorly.

For me, this was by far the weakest issue of the crossover.  Not because of the lack of action, I think the breath was taken in the right place, but because the art is so bad, and because I still don’t feel like Fraction has a handle on any of these characters.  I feel like it is only by accident that Fraction is able to get characterization right (the third Wolverine panel on the penultimate page…and also Wolverine’s part of the eulogy).  Mostly I rank him between Austen and Milligan as writing some of the worst X-stories of all time.

Story: 2 - Average
Art: 1 - Poor

Comments

  1. Well, as long as this doesn’t set a precedent for the rest of the crossover, I can handle a weak issue.

  2. uuuggghhh, this is what I was worried about.

  3. @rockingeek I love what he’s done with Iron Man, but his work on X-Men has ranged from awful to less than average.

  4. @vadamowens: yea, the events which took place weren’t awful, just the dialog, narration.  and art.  I think the next issue will return it to form.

@cutty & rockingeek: You both called it.

  5. Just read it.  You ain’t kidding brotha, your review is 100% spot on (although you may have been too kind on your story rating).

I can’t believe the weak link of the crossover is on the flagship book; that just ain’t right

  6. I don’t really see the problem with the art.

  7. The beats were cool(Hope meeting Cyclops and Magneto, the Pierce/Danger/Cerebra "thing" and the eulogy), but Fraction can’t write the X-men for shit, most of the times his characterizations and dialogs don’t make any goddamn sense. I’m sure he’s kicking ass on Iron Man, but Uncanny’s just not his book… Give it to Yost!!!

  8. @vadamowens: I couldn’t have said it any better myself.  I hope when Fraction takes over Thor he leaves Uncanny. I’d love to see Yost and Kyle or Abnett and Lanning on this title.

  9. @JesTr: Oh, fuck yeah! DnA on Uncanny would be fuckin’awesome, what a fucking brillant idea!

  10. Abnett and Lanning?  Could you fucking imagine?  I’d have to change my pants.  God damn that would be sweet.

  11. No put Cornel on this book

  12. @vadamowens, JesTr, rockingeek & twistedaijuu: How about Anyone But Claremont/Liefeld?

    Or Milligan/Land.

    Or Austen/Portacio.

Hickman could totally write a science team book, but otherwise…dare I say it: Garth Ennis’s X-Men?

  13. Garth on Uncanny… in our fucking dreams!

  14. *sigh*

I know, but it’s a good dream.  And I don’t want to wake up.

  15. Ennis on X-men… I don’t think he could do an in-continuity X-men book. I mean, he could, but it wouldn’t be Ennis-awesome. Now if you switched out the ‘L’s for ‘N’s on the Astonishing side of things…
