I can definitely see why there are people out in the ether of the Internet that don’t like this book. This is definitely a Punisher of a different tone and pedigree. And I don’t mind a bit. I consider myself a fairly big Punisher fan, and while I love the MAX interpretation, I can also find validity in Remender’s take on the character. This book is just big dumb fun. The Punisher is a crazy ass psycho with a great sense of humor. I can’t remember the last time I read the Punisher cracking jokes while he’s cracking skulls. I have a big grin on my face the whole time I’m reading this because it’s great action with a sprinkle of silliness. There’s a splash page toward the end of the issue that will simply make you grin like an idiot. This is the Punisher taking on villains and heroes with powers, and as the splash page shows, he’s pulling no punches. I actually commend Remender for taking the book in this direction. It’s definitely a risk when dealing with such a beloved character, but this different take breathes some life into the franchise and opens it up to the fans that don’t want to read a serious Punisher.

Part of what makes this book for me is Jerome Opena’s art. It’s just fantastic, and like he did with his work on FEAR Agent, he’s simply knocking it out the park. The details that go into each panel are simply stunning, and I love his lean, maniacal Punisher. The dark tones and heavy shadows really help accentuate the menace of the Punisher’s madness. Opena’s storytelling is so strong, and I can’t wait for each issue to come out. It’s really great visual candy.

  1. I like the review man

But did you seriously like that outfit Castle was wearing at the end? That was embarrassing to look at

  2. @TNC~ Hell yeah!  Like I said, you gotta be in the mode for goofy stuff like that.  It’s a different tone for the book, and I’m excited to see just what that outfit is going to do.

  3. I dug the outfit with the exception of the ant-Man helmet.

  4. Nice review.
