Somewhere, I hope the eight-year-old who’s never read a DC book in her life is enjoying this. As for me, I’m ready for the training wheels to come off.

As with last issue, every character seems compelled to announce each other’s names at all times so we don’t forget. It’s the Speak ‘n’ Spell school of dialogue: This is Superman! This is Batman! For someone who’s never read the characters, it’s a good fast introduction to their powers, but aside from Barry their personalities aren’t all that interesting. It’s Attitude, with a capital A.

And I’m Underwhelmed.

  1. I know the characters and I enjoyed the hell out of this book. You don’t know what their powers are in this universe/reboot. It is possible that powersets may have changed. I personally had so much fun with this book that I wish it would be released earlier than 6 weeks.

    • I’m glad you liked it. To each their own.

It is possible that the powersets have changed, but this book isn’t showing us that yet. What it is doing is hitting all the highlights as early and often as possible so we know what their powers are, and so far they’re the traditional powers. That’s fine. Right now I’m more concerned with caring about these characters than learning their powersets, but I’m sticking with the title to see where it takes us.

  2. You don’t know what you’re talking about. This issue was twice as good as the first one. They are really pulling this together. The Superman they have introduced us to is threatening. So far, we know that this universe’s Batman, Green Lantern, and the Flash can barely hold him back. We don’t know which way this is going to go or what kind of relationship Superman and Batman are going to have going on with this. I like that and it’s refreshing to see the old camaraderie ripped away and this harsh new reality imposed. I picked this up with Wonder Woman #2 and I am absolutely loving what they have done with her. So, when I got to the end of JL #2 and saw “Next: Wonder Woman!”, my blood raced! I am betting that DC sets it up so that Superman’s equal is WW and I don’t think they are going to see eye to eye!

  3. If you’re rating JL #1 a zero then that’s what I’m going to have to rank you’re ability to judge quality. MTV comic readers. If you don’t get everything you want, and wants are fickle in this hipster world, than foot-stomping ensues. Poo.

    • If a reader doesn’t get everything they want out of a book, why keep reading it? And if a person thinks it sucks, that doesn’t make them whatever an “MTV comic reader” is, it makes them someone who doesn’t want to spend another $4 on something they don’t like. What’s the harm in that?

    • Also, what if we don’t want threatening Supermen or harsh new realities? What if we just want solid, fun comic books?
