Ironically for a comic that actually has a plot other then a Blackest Night tie-in this series has a very hectic pace. With Green Lantern it’s probably going to be all over the place since it’ll show what other major characters are doing during the main event. This title, as of right now, and it’s cast seems like it won’t interact fully with what’s going on with Hal. So Tomasi is free to do whatever he wants to do. Sadly I have to say it is a bit too hetic for me to read.

There are some good moments with the characters Tomasi is going to focus on. Gardener has a run in with the greatest fly in the history of the universe. I missed Bzzd so it’s nice to see him in this Black Lantern form. You get this creepy family reunion with Arisia and her family. Then you have Kryb trying to find her babies; and if it’s going to go where I think it’s going to go. Then Tomasi is going to be a sick, sick man if he does it. However, because the pacing of this is very erratic Tomasi doesn’t spend much time with each character. He gets a bit more time with Rayner and Jade; other then that he spends about 2-3 pages for each character. It’s not badly written or anything but it’s really hard to follow this issue at points.

Patrick Gleason is doing a great job with this title as of late. If there’s anyone I was convinced would do creepy alien designs for the Black Lanterns it would be Gleason. Although technically you don’t really see what these Black Lanterns truly look like until at least halfway threw this. Moments like with the Alpha Lanterns or seeing what Bzzt sees is truly amazing to look at. He’s keeping up with the pace and if anything else Gleason is making me like this particular issue.

Don’t get me wrong, this is a good issue by all means. But I think Tomasi is juggling too much for just one storyline. He’s done this a lot lately with focusing on three to four characters at a time per arc. Still with Blackest Night hanging over this and with the stuff he’s been doing with these characters as of late. This might be too much work for one man to handle. Hopefully I am wrong though.

  1. Good review & valid points all.  However, I’ll respectfully disagree.. I am extremely happy with the wide scope of GLC and GL #45 the past few months as the BN title has focused in my opinion on simply too much Black Lantern reveals.  I’ve felt when reading the BN book that I wanted to know what was going on with the various Corps members and plot threads that have been building up.  So far, I haven’t seen much of that in BN.. and the "Black Lanternization" of some characters I never really read up on hasn’t had the impact for me.

These past few issues of GLC and also in GL #45 I’ve seen those threads (Sinestro Corps battling Star Sapphires, what Kyle and Guy are up to, etc.) followed up on.  I also have been pleased to see that the material from Tales of the Corps leads nicely into these events- for example, Arisia’s portion of this issue logically follows the backstory you got in Tales of the Corps (yet, you don’t need the Tales mini to follow this).  I get what you’re saying about the scope and pace of the GLC books- it is a lot to digest and I may feel differently about it if it continues for several more months, but right now, I’m really digging it.

  2. @JMS: I’m gald Tomasi is doing this type of scope. He’s basically writing about characters Geoff Johns will most likely not touch in the main event. I just think he’s good too many friggen characters to write for. Probably a good 6-8 characters were focused on here. That’s too much for me and it showed (at least for me) when Tomasi laid this out.

  3. I see what you mean.  I do wish some of these storylines found their way into the main BN event.  They’re pretty interesting to me and I’d like to see more.

(I should mention that I’ve now read BN: Batman #2.  Also great I thought.  That is how an event tie-in should be.  I am not sure which I enjoyed more, GLC 40 or BN Batman 2.. and the scope was MUCH narrower on the BN Batman book.)

  4. Good review.  The pacing is erractic and plot points do tend to get juggled.  This is due to the sheer amount of character that appear in this book.  Tomasi does a great job with juggling all the plot points.  He’s probably having a harder time now lining up everything within the "event".
