We got a fascist Captain America. We got a former Commie assassin Captain America. We got a Nazi cyborg with its head heading AIM (or RAID). We got a "third wing" candidate run by a Nazi with a skeleton head. We got good writing. We got good art. What more could you ask for? I've been hearing the argument of "well, each issue is so equally good, there's no stand-out issues to get excited about." Seriously. The big drawback to this series is "The awesomeness is TOO consistent." This is a problem? Honestly, this is the problem? If you haven't been picking this book up, a thousand slaps onto you for not reading the book that people think is TOO good on a constant basis.
Anyways, the issue is a three-fold unrolling of the events of last issue. First, you have the "Steve" from two issues back that Sharon found in a container, then a table. I kind of figured it was the Grand Director, the 50's "Commie Smasher" Cap that went nuts come back to life. And this issue? Sure enough, it's the Grand Director. That makes me happy. So, he's been chilling in Faustus's basement for the last few years and is being conditioned smash the "pretender", Bucky, in revenge for killing his Bucky, Nomad. Ah, the irony. This is definitely a match-up I'll be anticipating next issue. Oh, and he yells "Don't do that!" when Sharon is about to shoot him. That made me laugh.
We also have the steady climb of Senator Gordon Wright, the Skull's puppet candidate, as a contender for President. Polling shows 20% of voters looking to vote for him and a leading presence among independants, an impressive start for a third party candidate, which Faustus and the Skull plan to increase. This isn't the first time the Red Skull has tried to use American politics against itself, only a few years removed from the Dell Rusk incident when he snatched the role of Defense Secretary. Yet, I don't think the Skull has ever tried anything so massive. It's also an interesting critique on third party candidates and their rhetoric. Wright, with his vague "America needs a new leader" answers and "Radical change must be done" rhetoric is still the same tune everyone from JFK to Hitler's been preaching since the dawn of modern politics.
The third, and main, plot comes from Cap/Bucky and the Falcon tracking Armin Zola and AIM and the hijinks that ensue. The action here is well paced and well-drawn by Steve Epting, who continues to make this book top-notch. Most likely because of the presence of Falcon, Bucky is decidedly less brutal than past issues, taking everyone down without a single kneecapping. As Zola downloads himself away from the battle, he self-destructs the base, leading to your standard James Bond "escape from exploding base" finale. It's interesting to contrast how Bucky acts here as opposed to his meeting with Clint. Where he made it clear he doesn't give a rat's backside what Hawkeye thinks, he almost goes out of his way to prove to Falcon he's worthy of Cap's mask, even if Falcon still calls him "Bucky" in the field. There are also nice moments like Bucky's acknowledgment that he feels at home amidst such violence to Zola's almost cartoony delivery of his lines. It's all good.
I honestly can't see anything bad to where anyone couldn't love this book. Every issue is a gem and this one is no exception. I especially wait the Bucky/Grand Director fight that's forthcoming. A hat tip to Brubaker and Epting for another fantastic issue.
