Quick review for a great book:

Once again, Brubaker and colleagues hit the ball out of the park. All of the characters you love are here: Bucky, Sam, Sharon, and the egomaniacal Nazis. Here the plot is advanced on several fronts:

1. Sharon realizes the identity of Steve’s Doppelganger. Those of you who don’t know Cap’s history will learn that in the ’50’s, there was a replacement Cap who ended up insane. This is our man – who will now be part of the Skull’s nefarious plans to destroy America.
2. Bucky and Sam continue to track the Nazis and attempt to rescue Sharon. They come close to catching Zola, and the fight is great.
3. The Skull and his crew push their agenda to launch a “Third Wing” presidential candidate. The parallels to fringe candidates in recent elections are creepy.

Each story is fleshed out nicely, and the result is the continuation of a great serial. This is, without a doubt, the best book written today (that I read regularly, anyway). Years from now, people will use this run as an example of some of the best comic writing ever accomplished.

Comments

  1. Yeah, this is a good book, but 5 out of 5? I don’t know. Maybe it’s like Conor has said in the past, that when you get used to the level of excellence of a title like this, then month-to-month it gets harder to appreciate it. But the truth is, not a lot seems to be happening. It’s a slow burn, and maybe when it’s all collected it will be really amazing to read, but I felt like this issue was treading water a bit. Falcon did kick ass in this book, though. I’ll say that.

  2. I don’t particularly mind, but shouldn’t this be marked for spoilers?

  3. re: Patio I disagree, almost every issue of Cap has been a five for me since we started rating. What’s always good still deserves its due IMHO

  4. @ohcaroline – My bad – I reread my review and think that it definitely should be marked for spoilers.

  5. You can go back to the "Your Comics" page and edit it to give it a spoiler warning.

  6. i LOVE this series and think everyone should be reading it, but i have to agree with patio a bit about the 5 star rating.
