While I still think Peter Tomasi’s ‘Batman and Robin’ is one of the best comics, let alone Batman comics, on the stands right now. Scott Snyder’s and Greg Capullo’s run has certainly been no slouch. Easily becoming one of the best, if not THE best, title of the relaunch. Snyder has basically the entire Batworld on his fingertips and anything is up for grabs. So it is a bit refreshing to see him take a new route without going to the old standbys.

What I like about this particular issue is how, once again, Snyder mixes up the action sequences with the overall narrative. While Batman fighting in the subway has a purpose for the current story, you could make the case of this just being another average day for the Dark Knight. The way Snyder writes his way into handling one particular gang is clever and shows he can bring a more fun side then the particular ‘doom and gloom’. Not to say that the usual ‘doom and gloom’ is bad by any means. This opening mystery of the ‘League of Owls’ gets a bit of a history lesson and it’s amazing to see just how far this ‘owl’ hole goes. (I wanted to say rabbit, but obviously that wouldn’t fit) It’s another instance of how Snyder is able to both give us a nice piece of exposition but making it entertaining and not bogging us down on the details.

Boy oh boy, how amazing is Greg Capullo? Again I was one of many people who didn’t know what to think of him when he first popped into the scene. But with three issues into print, it’s safe to say Capullo can draw Batman for the rest of his career. His style just….’fits’ with this character and everything that happens around him. Whether it’s Batman fighting in the subway, or him gliding in the night; it all looks so gorgeous. He’s got that Frank Miller, Dark Knight Returns style to it (notice the chins) that just works for me. There’s also a good amount of detail in these pages too and I love how each hideout of the Owls members are uniquely different. (Clearly some of these members have bigger budgets then others)

What more can I say about this fantastic issue? Scott Snyder reveals a hell of a lot about this mysterious faction without giving much away. But then again with the Greg Capullo art just giving me an orgasm on every page (just saying, I hope it isn’t just me) it’s a bit tough to know what is better. The story of the art? The answer of course is both. Great story and brilliant art makes this THE best title of the new 52.
