iFanboy #192 – Best Comic Book Series of 2010

Show Notes

2010 was a tremendous year for comic books. There were so many great comics and it seemed like iFanboy read them all.

Or tried to, anyway.

From the crowded field of excellence only one book can elbow its way to the front and reign supreme as the Best Comic Book Series of 2010. Or, actually, three books can because there are three iFanboys and each has a very distinct idea as to which comic book series was the best of the year!

Conor Kilpatrick choice was a tale of two books as he named Justin Gray, Jimmy Palmiotti, and Amanda Conner AND Judd Winick and Sami Basri’s Power Girl from DC Comics as the Best Comic Book Series of 2010!

Ron Richards rewarded excellence, longevity, and dependability with his choice of Brian Michael Bendis, David LaFuente, and Sara Pichelli’s Ultimate Spider-Man from Marvel Comics as the Best Comic Book Series of 2010!

Josh Flanagan was captivated by the searingly gritty portrayal of life, love, and crime on the reservation and thus Jason Aaron and R.M. Guera’s Scalped from DC Comics’ Vertigo imprint was his choice for the Best Comic Book Series of 2010!

  1. Hard to pick just one for me. My top 3 were Batman and Robin, The Unwritten, and Daytripper (even though it was a miniseries).

  2. Good show. I could get behind Scalped as book of the year. Although my personal choice would be either Chew or Batman and Robin.

  3. Conor, you are not wrong.

  4. It’s got to be Chew for me.

  5. Scalped.

    Scalped.

    Scalped Scalped Scalped.

    Scalped  Scalped Scalped Scalped Scalped.

  6. Conor shuold maybe do another podcast just about Powergirl.

  7. I’m surprised to be writing this, but I gotta go with Thanos Imperative.

  8. Probably Batman and Robin or Flash.

  9. Unknown Soldier!

  10. Just watching Conor’s segment made me wanna re-read those Power Girl trades.

  11. Aye Josh, I am with you about scalped-Best Book of the year. Ron, “re-jiggered”. That made me laugh. Seriously though, I read all of these books because you guys have recommended them. My life is made that much more complete because of the books you guys recommend on a week in, week out basis. Thank the three of you and the community for a great year and all your time and dedication to comics. Really appreciate it.
  12. I was worried that their would be a drop off in quality after Conner and Jimmy Palmiotti left Powergirl, but  this Judd Winick and Sami Basri run is just as good. And this is coming from someone that hasn’t been a Winick fan in the past.

  13. Man,i don’t read any of those, but I have to go with chew, with irredeemable or walking dead close behind

  14. I looked back through my POWs for the last year and was surprised to see how much Batman and Spider-Man I had picked but the one title that has hit it for me, month in and month out, would have to be Sweet Tooth.  Lemire’s on point right now and Sweet Tooth is the very best.

  15. All good choices. I don’t think I can pick one.

  16. I’ve found Winick’s Powergirl to be a definite step down from the first 12 issues but it is still certainly good. It’s just more of a 4 star book than a 5 star book.

    Cannot fault the choices otherwise.

  17. Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep!

  18. THOR THE MIGHTY AVENGER! COME ON PEOPLE!!!!

    (also Scalped. Love that series).

  19. I would have gone with Daytripper, but I guess that’s a mini and the others discussed were all ongoing.  Scalped and Ult. Spidey, definitely rank up there though.  Maybe I’ll try PowerGilr in trades.

As for Josh not having picked any issues of Scalped as POTW this year, hope it’s not becasue of the mailstrom unleased last year over some major event (I really wish I could remember what it was)that started the same week Josh made Scalped the POTW.

  20. I haven’t heard Geoff Johns praised in a looong time.  Was this just not his year?  Or was he overhyped in the past?

  21. I agree with the choice of Powergirl. Generation Lost has also been very enjoyable.

  22. Loving Conor’s hat. Very funny. Do a Hellblazer show in the new year please guys!

  23. If we’re allowing minis, I have to say Captain America: Patriot. Surprise of the year. Please god, pick up the trade if you like… comics.

Tied for 2nd would be Red Robin and Batgirl.

3rd goes to Thor: The Mighty Avenger.

Honorable mentions include JL:GL, Thor and the Warriors Four, Darkwing Duck and Thanos Imperative.

  24. “Siege” is what I’d pick.

  25. I probably would’ve picked Batman and Robin or Unwritten, but I think we can all agree that we’ve read some excellent comics this year.

  26. Conor is not wrong indeed.

  27. Red Robin is my favorite series.

  28. Witchblade all the way.  Beautiful art, with awesome story telling.

  29. Let’s see my top 3 would be,  Thor, New avengers, wolverine

  30. For me its Generation Lost. It has been the most consistantly enjoyable read for me.

  31. Batman & Robin for me.

  32. Definetly agree with Ron on ultimate spider-man, Lafuente is Great

  33. Scalped would be my choice as well.  Invincible could’ve been the pick if more came out this year.  Chew is close.

  34. Locke & Key by far.

  35. My pick for favorite on-going is S.H.I.E.L.D.

No other book has captured my imagination like it did, in just 4 issues.

  36. Hands down my vote goes to Chew.

  37. where did conor get that shirt?

  38. I’m with Josh. Scalped all the way.

  39. Scalped, Chew, Locke and Key and walking dead.

Power girl not bad and not really into spiderman although I may have to give this a go now.

NEED MORE MONEY, MUST BUY COMIC BOOKS!!!!!!!!!

  40. Conor is dead on with Power Girl. Best series this year. If only they could do the same thing w/Superman.

  41. The walking dead, s.h.e.i.l.d. are my picks.

  42. Ultimate Spiderman and Chew are runners up, but Scalped this year has been up there with the all-time greats.  Loved Power Girl as well but dropped it after the first creative team left, may have to revisit that decision; do other readers agree with Conor?

  43. Great job on the video!

  44. Josh, I read Scalped and I’m with you: there can be no other choice (except maybe Hellblazer).

  45. All good choices guys. I’d add Locke and Key, Brightest Day, Spiderman (both Ultimate and 616), Joe the Barbarian and B.P.R.D. to my list among many others. It’s been a stand out year for comics.

  46. Perhaps it shouldn’t surprise me knowing each of your tastes, but I have to admit I’m more than a bit surprised that Scalped is picked as Best Series, when Josh admits he never picked it for POTW, though I’m thinking its been POTW from someone this year, once or twice…maybe Im mis-remembering.   Even more surprising is Conor’s pick, of Power Girl, which although is definitely a 4 or 5 star book each month in MY opinion, I dont think its ever been POTW from anyone!

Scalped really isnt my style of book and I already read Power Girl though I think Im going to have to go back and start picking up Ultimate Spider Man again since I fell off the title a couple years ago.

  47. Strange Tales II, Morning Glories, then, Sweet Tooth

  48. @HailScott  True. Unknown Soldier would be my other one. Consistently amazing. Very sad it ended early, but thought Dysart did a great job of bringing everything to a satisfying conclusion considering the circumstances.

  49. @Skyfire124  I personally picked it, but it was never on a week when I had the official task.

  50. @Skyfire124  Power Girl was the POTW at least once, ’cause that’s what made me pick up the first trade.

  51. Unfortunately not counting trades which leaves out Scapled, and Walking Dead for me, it was a close call between ThunderBolts and RASL. I choose Thunderbolts for surprising me every month, producing great art work, and coming out on time.

  52. My top three in order for this year:  1. Orc Stain  2. Flash  3. Action Comics.

At this time last year there is no way I would have seen any of that coming.

  53.  I made sure I didn’t miss an issue of Batman & Robin and Brightest Day. Overall I was never really disappointed with either and I was ok with the various artists.

  54. For me, pretty much all year, my favourite book has been whatever book Jason Aaron just put out.

SHIELD is probably second. I don’t know where this Dustin Weaver guy came from but Marvel needs to go back there and get some more.

  55. Almost as stereotypical as it can get.

  56. 1.) Batman and Robin.
    2.) Forgetless
    3.) Nemesis

  57. Production questions:

    1) Ron, are you still shooting your remote (i.e. non-NY) segments at Revision3?

    2) If so, what’s with the broken camera? It’s also being used for the Veronica/Robert side of the Tekzilla set, apparently.

  58. 1. The Unwritten
    2. Locke & key
    3. Chew

  59. deadpool is my #1 thank you very much sir , you lose .
    2 & 3 are locke & key
    chew .

  60. GI Joe Origins and GI Joe/Cobra were unerringly on point in 2010.

Also, love that we have an iFanboy video show featuring a sportcoat rather than a roster of plain flannel shirts.

  61. Power Girl has a ridiculously large chest lol

Deadpool and Flash are cool with me.

  62. The Walking Dead.

    Without a doubt.

  63. Walking Dead & Scalped are tied for #1.

  64. Joe the Barbarian
    Haunt
Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep.

  65. I just got the trades for power girl for 5 bucks each. It damn good!!
