FAIREST #1

New York Times best-selling, award-winning creator Bill Willingham presents a new series starring the female FABLES. Balancing horror, humor and adventure, FAIREST explores the secret histories of Sleeping Beauty, Rapunzel, Cinderella, The Snow Queen, Thumbelina, Snow White, Rose Red and others.

The first 6 issue arc follows the misadventures of Briar Rose after she is stolen away by the goblin army in FABLES #107. Fan-favorite artist Phil Jimenez (WONDER WOMAN, THE INVISIBLES) returns to Vertigo to pencil the opening storyline. Award-winning cover artist Adam Hughes (WONDER WOMAN, BATGIRL) provides covers, starting with a wraparound cover on issue #1.

Future arcs will be written by 2011 Arthur C. Clarke winner Lauren Beukes with art by Inaki Miranda, and iZOMBIE scribe Chris Roberson with art by Shawn McManus! And remember: They may be beautiful, but there will be blood.

  1. Never read Fables before but I always wanted too, the preview for this looked really cool so I’m on board.

  2. This is going to be AWESOME!

  3. I’m not a fables dude but i may have to pick this up and check it out!

  4. Anybody know if Vertigo titles get reduced to 1.99 after a month like DCU titles? If so, I’ll probably wait and read this digitally.

    • They have been so far, I’ve been buying backissues of American Vampire for $1.99.

    • that’s probably the best, because the god awful newsprint ruined Phil’s pencils.

    • I thought the exact same thing about the paper. This book could REALLY have benifitted from a higher quality glossy paper. I remember thinking the same about that creator owned book he did a while back that was sorta Dungeons & Dragonsy. His art and the coloring just look bad on newsprint for some reason. The paper never bothers me on the other Vertigo books I read: Scalped, Sweet Tooth, American Vampire, Northlanders, DMZ, and even the regular Fables. I think a large part of it is the coloring. I just wish they would make an exception with the newspaper for this title. I’m pretty sure they have in the past for other books.

  5. Looking forward to this. I like the idea of rotating creative teams on a Fables spin off.

  6. Will be looking forward to Roberson’s Cinderella. Loved both minis.

  7. Fantastic cover. May make personal use of.

  8. Got sold on the Vertigo 4-pack by DCBS, so giving it a shot. I tried Fables once before and it didn’t stick, but maybe this spin-off will be the trick.

  9. I’ve been reading Fables in hardcover & loving it – I’ll give this a try.

  10. Great art! Jimenez is always fantastic. The story so far is basically your typical fables adventure. It’s good

  11. Jimenez’s art was gorgeous, but didn’t love the issue. For a series called “Fairest” it doesn’t make sense to me to have Ali Baba as the lead for the main issue. NOT what I was expecting at all. The plot was somewhat muddled to me.
That said, I’ll be back next issue to see where it goes.

    • Yeah, I thought that was weird too.

    • To be fair, they can make the case that it is really a Briar Rose story where she just happens to be sleeping in the beginning. Also, the state the Imperial City is in centers around her so she is very much a presence. But that’s from previous Fables stories and if you’re a new reader it’s not really explained. The plot isn’t essential to this one but it does add some context.

  12. I really enjoyed this and wow the art by Jimenez’s was jaw dropping. I know the first issue didn’t have any of the female leads yet but the setup and ending have me very intrigue for more,,4/5

  13. I dug it. Solid artwork inside and out of this book. Since it is the start of a story arc, I wasn’t expecting to be hit over the head with princesses and high action, so following Ali Baba and his imp was entertaining me. I good set-up and I’m glad they didn’t charge an extra 50 cents for the wrap around cover.

  14. It tokk me a week however; for me this took pick of the week easily. I enjoyed the artwork and the reworking of the old classic fairy tale. POW indeed!!

    K

  15. I really liked this but for a book based round the female Fables characters they didn’t feature very much. Loved the firefly references.
