SHELLSHOCKER: IDW Delivers New and Old TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES Comics this Summer

It was only right that I had a mouth full of pizza as I opened my email.

Today, IDW announced a new partnership with Nickelodeon–current keepers of the ooze–to publish all new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles adventures based on the original comic series by Eastman and Laird. It's all part of Nickelodeon's initiative to bring the franchise back to its former glory, all culminating in a new CG animated series in 2012.

IDW did not list specific creative teams for the new ongoing series and graphic novels, but we can expect the books to launch this summer.

And even if you're disinterested in the new direction for Leonardo, Raphael, Donatello, Michelangelo and Master Splinter, you may be interested in some reprints of classic material. Oh, yes.

"IDW's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles will kick off with an ongoing series this summer, featuring new and exciting storylines that also maintain the “turtle power” core beloved by millions of fans. In addition to the all-new series, TMNT fans will also be treated to newly remastered collections of classic Turtles comics, beginning with the original 1980s series that started this worldwide phenomenon."

Bring on those TMNT archives and omnibus editions!

Some of you may be smirking. Me, I'm excited to revisit the characters responsible for my reading comics in the first place.

*fist raised*

Turtle. Power.

  1. So is it a reboot or a conitnuation of the old series or a spin-off of the newer cartoons?

@Suicidalkangarooz  Please read the article before commenting.

  3. The original Eastman/Laird issues were hardcore, and stand up even today. I hope this property gets new life.

Between its collections of classic GI Joe, Transformers and now TMNT – it’s safe to say that IDW is on a roll when it comes to reprinting hard to find material. Considering that the most recent printing of the original TMNT collections can’t be found for less than a 3 digit figure on ebay, I’m extremely interested in picking up the IDW collections of this material for a more affordable sum on the day of release.

  5. Bad. Fricken. ASS!!!!!!!

I hope a new “Coming Out of Their Shells” tour is among Nickelodeon’s plans.

If INSERT LATEST POP FAD HERE can perform in stadiums, surely these four can autotune their way onto our ipods.

  8. @PaulMontgomery  Yeah sorry, I did read it, just misread that first part. :(

I was just talking about how it sucks that there isn’t a relatively cheap collection of the old stuff and now this…HUZZAH!!!!

  12. JohhnyNormal JohhnyNormal says:

great getting the “original” trades is a nightmare presently…I look forward to rereading the series.

I actually have several of the original First Graphic Novels that collected them back in the ’80s. They must have been my first trades. I didn’t realize they were so valuable.

  20. stuclach stuclach says:

    Interesting.

  21. edward edward says:

Over the christmas break, i went back to the old farm (no joke, i am just like Clark kent) and went though some of my old TMNT graphic novels. They’re good but the medium is much more sophisticated today. it makes it hard to really tell.

As a kid i must have really loved those things because they look like they have been read a thousand times.

  22. RoiVampire RoiVampire says:

this is awesome. i hope one day the old archie TMNT series gets collected because that was some silly cosmic fun

  23. jrodine jrodine says:

@ Nate I, too, am really looking forward to the reprints of the original material. I was really disappointed that Mirage only got one collected volume out before they closed their doors.

  24. MBurnsOH MBurnsOH says:

Awesome, I really enjoy the turtles in comics and was sad to see the mirage series end last year. I’ll be looking forward to this.

  25. cowa-fucking-bunga!

  26. OddsBodkins OddsBodkins says:

Never got the Collected Vol. 1 and now we’ll be getting the IDW treatment!  Best things come and all that jazz.

  27. cormano cormano says:

The only bad news is that we’re not getting the end of Volume 4. I loved that series. I wonder where they’re continuing from.

  28. Firevine Firevine says:

Hmm, I wonder what I could get for my near-complete run of the original series.  Less #1, sadly.

Actually…that’s crazy talk, I wouldn’t part with them.

  29. stevec50 stevec50 says:

I think TMNT was less than a dozen issues into its original run when I began collecting, going back and getting the TPBs if I couldn’t get the originals.  I still admit to liking the first live-action film and many of the Archie books & spin-offs.  I have my fingers crossed that the new stuff will be good and also looking forward to filling in & replacing some of the stuff I missed or sold off over the years.  Kawabunga, dudes!

  30. I never read the original TMNT comics, but always heard they were great. Loved the cartoon as a kid and thought the first movie was a lot of fun. Haven’t seen it since it came out, so maybe I wouldn’t like it today, but I have good memories of it. Looking forward to seeing the old comics for the first time.
