Damian’s confrontation with Talia was a little meh, but I like where this is going.

Wow … I don’t usually get weepy at the end of a comic book … but DAMN!

July 29, 2011 2:23 pm Dammit ... should have seen this coming ...

I'm giving Genesis a shot, but am definitely not planning to start buying another family of books. Alex Ross is no Jack Kirby ... If you want proof just read Project Superpowers.
July 29, 2011 2:15 pm So what are some of the problems that you think have plagued the book? Maybe I'm more easily satisfied (and definitely less well educated from a critical standpoint) than others. I like to think of the city itself as a character and think of the narrative itself as postmodern in the sense that it hasn't at all times had a singular focus or run in a straight line. For example, the big reveal last month with Zee having kept a hidden stash of everything Matty has done over the last X years was totally out of the blue but also in a strange way totally consistent with her character.
July 28, 2011 5:00 pm My understanding was that the Kirby Estate's claim of ownership has always been contested by Marvel. Did the Court find either way in this regard? Did they deny the Estate's claim because it couldn't show ownership by Kirby at all or because Kirby signed away his copyright?
July 27, 2011 10:29 pm Would have given this a 2 if it hadn't been for the Speedball story. WTF Marvel?
July 27, 2011 3:59 am Sorry to say it, but that was a bit of a yawner ...
July 26, 2011 3:49 pm What has me on the edge of my seat is not being able to tell if this new incarnation of Loki is more hero than villian or villian than hero. This almost has the feel of an origin story. There were flashes here of the old Loki, but he seems to be pitting himself against the Serpent. This book and Detective Comics are both making me exceedlingly glad to be a devoted comic book reader.

July 26, 2011 3:12 pm @RapidEyeMovement: Glad you share my love of the character, but particularizing and compartmentalizing mediums of early twentieth century pop culture in that way elides the character's importance to the medium, genre and industry (there might be no Green Hornet, for example, without a Lone Ranger). In fact, the comic strip appeared only five years after the radio show (1938)--and over a decade BEFORE the television show (which, incidentally, was preceded by the comic book as well). Your logic isn't far removed from saying that Blade Runner isn't one of the greatest sci fi movies ever made because it was a novel adaptation.
July 26, 2011 11:28 am @mudd: To my knowledge, this book was never conceived as a "movie coming out cash in quick comic", but rather is a new ongoing set in the original Apes universe. If you're looking for a movie prequel, you can find it online here: http://www.apescomics.com/.

I look forward to this book every month. The artwork has been impeccable and the mystery/thriller genre story has me on the edge of my seat.
July 26, 2011 11:15 am Given the voluminous history of the character, I'm not seeing how he Lone Ranger doesn't make this list.
