April 29, 2014 4:13 am It's one of my very favorite books from the 90's, and the first 100% DIY indie comic that I ever followed starting from the first ish. I owe it all to those Warriors Of Plasm trading cards...(only kinda/sorta kidding.)
April 22, 2014 12:46 am Dudes, Virginia Applejack is like the on again/off again main character of Stray Bullets. Other characters can take center stage for arcs, but she's always been the recurring thread.
November 18, 2013 11:58 pm Ever since this, I've been in a Thor podcast tailspin. I just listened to that Matt and Brett love comics podcast on the Simonson run. Paul, I'm fairly certain Thor's old school boots are not made of liger pelts...that being said, I always thought Asgard has some weird ass yellow boot leather. This movie has a few pretty obvious flaws, but was just so damn fun in spite of them all. With insane charisma scores like Hiddleston's and Hemsworth's, this movie can skate over plot holes bigger than Ginnungagap! (check your mythology books.) Seriously, this movie just so much charm--a superhero fantasy that manages to be dark without losing itself in the doldrums. Give us a hero who does what's right and can still enjoy a good brawl. Give us a villain who relishes being a baddie every moment he's on the screen Give us... ANOTHER!!!
September 2, 2013 12:23 am Yeesh! Super-sad news, dudes. I've been checking in on this site for years, but only recently signed up. You have provided one of the only platforms for comics content that made me actually WANT to participate in message board culture. No hype machine, no out of control idiots on the boards. Just really smart thoughtful content. I'm sorry to see it go, but look forward to your future podcasts and other projects. "Friends don't say goodbye, they say good journey."
August 7, 2013 10:15 pm A STONE MAN FROM SATURN! That is a pretty excellent nod to the old comics, wish they didn't spoil that moment in the trailer though. I'm looking forward to this, but the trailer doesn't do such a great job of letting you know about the threat. Between this and the trailer, it's like Malekith is a non-entity. Not sure if that's just the studio trying to upsell Loki (i mean, he is the most charismatic actor in the cast by far) or if the actual plot/threat is too weak to sell. Smart move pulling the ol' switcheroo on the fish out of water trope. Jane in Asgard could be fun. High hopes.
August 5, 2013 3:06 pm Oh man. Very happy to see a callback to those old Dragon strips. In 1996 I was in high school, running a Planescape campaign for a group of friends I'd been playing with ever since the Marvel RPG hooked me in junior high. Half the fun was of course the banter and bickering at the table, but when trying to execute elaborately planned adventures, and at the same time dodging cheetos, and looking up what the to hit bonus would be for a magic sword forged on Pandemonium, while the characters were adventuring in Mechanus, I would always picture myself as the Knights' harried DM.
July 28, 2013 12:03 am If I'm remembering right, while lacking the same sort of economic repercussions of the explosions at the end of the film, the book closes with the narrator/Tyler badly scarred (like Heath Ledger in TDK facial scars) and hospitalized while the space monkeys of project mayhem are still out in the world causing all kinds of trouble and hidden like sleepers in all levels of society. That was the spookiness of the book, that even if Tyler got talked down/ had his cathartic moment, the chaos of project mayhem was ongoing. That could be an interesting world to tell stories in, though I'm also a bit underwhelmed by the married with children set up. I'll give it a shot though...
June 15, 2013 1:24 pm The more I think about it, the biggest things that bothers me is the bait and switch we got with the trailer. "In time you will help them accomplish wonders..." You know, in the context of that trailer, Jor El's speech really gave me tingles. Combined with the Terrence Malicky kid with a cape shots. I really thought we were being sold a hero that was built on idealism. A hero that would inspire greatness in others. A hero that, say, when Zod is crying about his loss of purpose in defending the Kryptonian people, might extend his hand and be like "I'm your people." (The turn the other cheek vibe would at least be consistent with the heavy handed Jesus stuff.) A hero that when given the ultimatum of "There's only one way this can end..." would think of another way... In MOS, Clark is way more of a hero before he puts on the suit. Once he's public, the only wonders he accomplishes are terror, citywide destruction and murder.
June 15, 2013 3:27 am Excellent points. The Pa Kent of the Snyderverse baffled me. Taught that kid some messed up lessons.
June 15, 2013 3:23 am Sorry you're getting so much flak for your review, Paul. The thread on this page just reinforces my impression of post Phantom Menace madness. In a couple of years people will look back and realize that, while there are certainly things to enjoy about this movie, it's just not worth getting huffy about it. I just hope that by the time we get to that point, Warners will have delivered a sequel that will raise the bar a few notches.
