June 7, 2011 2:00 pm Even the best writing talent won't bring in new readers to comics. All DC can hope to do is get some new existing comics readers who aren't reading DC, or bring back some former readers.

It's not the writing or the art that keeps new readers out of comics.
June 6, 2011 4:19 pm Interesting for someone like Dykstra to be directing this. I hope he does well -- Essex County is one of my faves.
June 6, 2011 4:17 pm It has flaws, it's not perfect, and yet it was still a whole lot of fun that I'd like to see again. That's what I pay for when I go to see a movie -- this is entertainment.
June 6, 2011 11:16 am @Josh - Your comment from the podcast re: Jennifer Lawrence. Totally agree. Wow.
June 5, 2011 12:52 pm My initial takeaway -- this was a solid movie, well cast, directed and acted. Some flaws, but as piece of entertainment very well done.  I walked out of the theater feeling I got my money's worth, and the film was still in my head well after I'd gotten home.

I think the biggest weakness in the film, which is true with all of the X films, was having too many characters without enough time to develop them. But that has more to do with the fact that these are movies and not TV series'.

The relationship between Charles and Erik was incredibly well done.

The only continuity issue for me was between Charles and Raven/Mistique. The films that are chronologically later don't show any kind of closeness between the characters that should be present based on what we see in this prequel.

Otherwise it seemed fine, relative to the other films (not the comics, which exist in their own universe).
June 2, 2011 2:34 pm Hilarious!

How many times has that scene been used like this? I wonder what goes through the head of the filmmakers when they see these?  Have they finally given up getting these pulled from YouTube?
June 1, 2011 12:05 pm @ActualButt  - Agree this won't bring in any new comic readers. It will undoubtedly bring over some new readers from the existing comic audience, and that's probably what DC is expecting.
May 31, 2011 10:43 am @JMann  - Isn't this the problem with a lot of superhero costumes? It takes some real work to translate these things into something film-able.
May 31, 2011 10:12 am I'm trying to think of what DC characters could/should be "next" for a film -- and I can't come up with any that haven't already been done (Batman and Superman).  And I think that speaks to the weakness of the DCU vs. MU for mass appeal superheroes.  Wonder Woman? Flash? Even the Green Lantern was a stretch, IMO, and I'll be surprised if the film pulls in big numbers.

The response to that would be that neither Iron Man or Thor were big league names outside of comics readers until the movies were made. And I guess therein lies the key -- execution.  Though from what I understand, it's that very thing that makes studio heads pass on a film.
