This is a hard comic to review because I know it's bad, yet I enjoyed it anyway. X-Men Forever is a blatant attempt to get a head start on the impending wave of '90s nostalgia books. (Yeah, you heard me! They're coming, so be prepared!) And you know what? It totally worked on me! The hokey dialogue, the soap opera elements, the over-explanatory inner monologues; all of Claremont's tics took me right back to being 10 years old. As did the art by Tom Grummet, which was suitably '90s flavored. I was skeptical about Grummet being the right choice, but he turned out to be perfect. The coloring was great, too. I loved how bright the colors were compared to most monthly Marvel comics, where the coloring seems muddy and muted. I had a couple fanboy moments reading this. It was great to see the X-Men in their old costumes, especially Wolverine in the brown one Daken is currently sporting in the regular Marvel U. And look, the Beast looks like the Beast! I can only in good conscious recommend this book to people who know exactly what they are getting into. This is not high art by any means. It needs to be read through the prism of late '80s - early '90s comics. I'm able to do that, because that was the golden age for me as a reader. There are a lot of great comics I read now that I truly love and enjoy, but none of them can compare to the feeling I had reading Uncanny X-Men #247 for the first time after snagging it off the spinner rack at my local Dairy Mart. That's why, even though I have no right to review this comic because I am far from impartial, I had to anyway. As bad as it was, it made me smile. And in this day and age, that must count for something. Right?

Oh, and by the by, did anyone else think the cover, and especially the corner box with the Jim Lee artwork, made this look like a comic you would get free after sending in candy wrappers or something? I could imagine myself as a kid looking at this cover and going, "These characters don’t belong together!"
It reads like Marvel Adventures – like a kids’ X-men title. A great shame.
Damnit… I refuse to commit to this book but nastalgia is making me curious. I need spoilers!
