This book has me completely torn in half.  I love Peter David’s writing.  When he’s left to his own devices, without some crossover dragging him down, he can be one of the best writers out there. Case in point, he takes a team of B and C level mutants and tells a great story with them.  For God’s sake, he made me care about Strong Guy.  It takes a hell of a writer to do that.

On the other hand, this is some of the worst art I’ve ever seen.  I’m sure Larry Stroman is a really nice guy but I’m pretty sure he draws with his feet.  While hanging upside down.  To be fair, a lot of the faces look really good on close-up, but when he gets to the rest of the body, everyone looks like the Stay-Puft Marshmellow Man after staying in the sun too long.

Story: 4 - Very Good
Art: 1 - Poor

  1. Great review, Beta.  I’m with you 100%.

I’ve loved almost every issue of this, but I can’t deal with Stroman’s art.  His pencils just aren’t for me. To be honest, they feel innapropriate for the tone of the story; it’s left me so frustrated that I had no problem breaking up my run of the book to wait out this guy’s turn at the table.  Here’s hoping when Layla’s story folds back in, it will bring an artist that restores the somber tone that made X-factor such an immersive experience to begin with.

  2. Oh brother… I thought the artist was just for the Secret Invation tie-ins but… Good God! I just can’t read this! I opened the book and saw the art and had no desire t even read it. It’s one of my fav books bt… geez! I think I was a bit nauseated while trying to read it. I don’t mean to bash since I usually appreciate anyone’s work but man… this art really isn’t for me. Maybe others can enjoy but not me. I’ll pick up with the next artist.
