OK, we’re at the 1/4 point, so it seems worthwhile to rate the works in progress.

Batman: 5/5. Beautifully drawn, especially for this format. A really good use of Batman/Bruce Wayne as the observer from a distance.

Kamandi: 4/5. A perfect Silver Age feel, both in story and in appearance. Great use of color.

Superman: 4/5. Kind of halfway between Busiek’s Samaritan and Morrison’s All-Star Superman in tenor. The art updates the Alex Ross painted look in a way that seems more credible.

Deadman: 5/5. Wow. Psychedelic, trippy art, bold lines, and ’60’s hipster dialogue. What more could one ask?

Green Lantern: 3/4. It’s solid, but the story hasn’t moved as much as compared to some of the other strips. The Quinones art is neat, but the GL logo is out of this world.

Metamorpho: 4/5. This story hasn’t moved much either, but it is so beautifully integrated with the Allred art that it doesn’t seem to matter. The kids’ panels at the bottom are a brilliant touch.

Teen Titans: 3/2. One situation in which the art really seems to be letting down the story. I get the Teen Titans/Titans rivalry, which is really the Robin/Nightwing rivalry, but it isn’t that riveting.

Strange Adventures: 4/4. Deserves extra credit just for the subtle update of the Silver Age Adam Strange look. There is no question that this is contemporary, but it is not the least bit modern.

Supergirl: 4/4. As a cat owner, this is really growing on me. Fantastic use of timeless humor.

Metal Men: 3/4. As an executive, DiDio makes a solid writer. The art is hilarious, if just for the depiction of Will Magnus in full tweed jacket, tie, and pipe regalia.

Wonder Woman: 1/1. One must wonder whether the creators understood their assignment. I have stopped reading this, and my headaches have cleared up.

Sgt. Rock: 3/4. Will Sgt. Rock ever look healthy after the beating his face has taken? The pulpy mess dripping from his head is a true horror of war.

Flash: 5/5. The parallel strips are quite clever, but the use of dot coloring in the Iris West strip to represent the reality to be altered and more contemporary techniques in the Flash strip to represent the Flashes out of time is brilliant. This is a brilliant complement to Flash Rebirth.

Demon/Cat Woman: 4/4. Strong in every way. I’m looking forward to seeing how this one turns out.

Hawkman: 4/5. The first strip was such a good depiction of Hawkman that it became an instant classic.

Story: 4 - Very Good
Art: 5 - Excellent

  1. I think the entire commics community is in agreement that the Wonder Woman title is god awful!  I took one look at the page, saw 70 panels squished in again and didn’t read it…  and I’m a better man for it.

  2. My headaches have cleared up, too.

  3. Yeah, I dropped WW after the first installment.  Everything else is fun though, as long as you light up a bone right before.

  4. Streaky rules, and if she’s taking comissions I want Amanda Connor to draw one for me. Her Supergirl is great too.

I skipped WW as well. There could be some brilliant stuff in there but it’s just too damned small and busy and my 40 y.o. eyes can’t take it.
