The “War of Kings” storyline, line-wide, has been nothing but awesome, and this issue of the main series is no different.  What I like about this book is that, each issue, Abnett and Lanning bring something from the other books into this one.  What it does is shows the reader how the other pieces of the puzzle are involved, but doesn’t require the reader to invest in those other pieces to fully understand what’s going on.  In the case of this issue they bring in the Darkhawks and explain what their role is in the series.  I’ve not read a single issue of “Ascension,” yet I feel like I know enough to understand what’s going on.  They’ve also piqued my interest in that series with a cool idea discussed here.  That’s been another upside of the way they’ve shown the other pieces- they act as mini tastes of those books, so if you like what you see here, you ought to check out the book of origin.  Finally, in each issue something happens.  There are certainly no complaints about “Just get there already!” because the journey is truly enjoyable.  If you thought “Secret Invasion” was too slow, this is a perfect opposite to that.  This is a great issue art-wise, as well.  Of particular note is the opening battle scene; there’s a mix of awe inspiring sci-fi war machines along with the extensive devestation they have caused.
If there is one thing that I have a problem with, it’s that a lot of details are filled in by telling the reader.  We hear about revolts on other worlds and growing discontent amongst the Shi’ar.  We hear about how the Inhumans are trying to get the Kree’s evolution jump started.  But we don’t see any of these things.  I realize that there are only so many pages, but these are important details in the overall story and it would be nice to have evidence of them.  A one page, multi-panel spread would be one solution.  Some sort of “Comuniques from the Front” at the end of the book that talks about things that we don’t see in the main story would be another.  This way the reader is aware of these points and can react accordingly.
I’m very interested in the end of this book.  It wasn’t quite unexpected, but I was surprised the creative team went where they did.  If it sticks, it changes the overall possible outcome of the story and makes it truly unknown.  Hopefully we will see repurcussions of this in a particular corner of the main MU.
Overall, great book and a great story.  If you aren’t reading this at this point, pre-order the trade when it gets sollicited.
