Admittedly, there are things in this book which are familiar and done. For instance, the cantankerous convention guest (e.g. - Tom Taylor) is reminiscent of the guest of honor in "Bimbos of the Death Sun" (a fun, although dated, sci-fi convention mystery novel). The little hints about things to come, and being able to draw your own insights from subtle and not so subtle words and visuals remind me of "Twin Peaks" or "Lost".
Having said that, it also comes to mind that this type of work is really hard to pull off. We haven't gotten to the point yet that reveals need to be made, which will ultimately tell anyone reading this whether it was a worthwhile ride. So, I have to put the plot aside.
Tom Taylor is a great character. Part of the world of people that make their living by not doing much, but feel put upon by what it is that they do. Since he cannot define himself by occupation (at least not fulfillingly), he acts as a literati. In this issue, you get to see both sides of it. On one hand, he's telling his driver about literary history of his father's estate having been where Mary Shelley thought of Frankenstein, and that John Milton might have devised Paradise Lost under its roof. Yet, in an earlier scene in University College, he is unaware that the name that a classmate gave him, Lizzie Hexam, is a Dicken's heroine. He saves himself by rattling off Dickensian geography.
I do wonder where the letters that appear on a few things (the cell-phone, his pajamas) are going.
All in all, it's a good read if you like to spend time pondering if there is something deeper. I think it will be a good six issues before we know if it's a good story.
