Welcome, one and all, to the continuation of The Uncannily Stiff X-Men, courtesy Greg Land and Co.
Honestly. As in the last issue, Land's pencils look like posturing models (I assume he sources his images from posturing models), which gives the book the feeling that it's being play-acted by animate mannequins. This is particularly problematic in panels where the characters over-emote or mis-emote, such as a rendering of Pixie beaming in pain on page 5 or the excitable thug at the bottom of page 25. In its writing, however, this issue is a lot more engaging than #500. In fact, I enjoyed it quite a bit, dispite many painfully annoying story/dialouge choices (I'm looking at you, excruciatingly pandering and faddish references to all that is teen and all that is green). I'm left with the pleasant feeling that the story is ramping up nicely and that the proverbial shite is about to make its legendary contact with the mythical fan.
Let's just say that I enjoyed the issue in a similar manner to that in which Mr. De La Rocha enjoyed his meeting with Red Queen. Hm!

‘(I’m looking at you, excruciatingly pandering and faddish references to all that is teen and all that is green)’
??? I don’t know what this means? I’m not hip enough, I guess?
It may means you’re not unhip enough–I suppose its all a matter of perspective.
By ‘teen’ I was referring to the "she can’t remember the last time she’s had this many Red Bulls".
By ‘green’ I meant Warren Worthinton III’s hyper-awesome hybrid hydrogen/electric hot-rod. Last issue’s solar-powered, feeding-back-into-the-grid X-quarters was an even more absurd example of the same.
So we still have iffy art, lame pop-culture and green references, and just an over weird new status quo? Yeah I can see why I shouldn’t have dropped this *sarcasm*
I don’t know why I would even consider putting myself in the positiion of Greg Land apologist, but I think he just needs more time to develop. I agree there’s a stiffness to the figures. But there was promise in this issue.
I forgot about the Red Bull line. *groan* I think the opening scene was overwrought in its writing. It’s a dramatic moment, but the whole "Welcome to San Francisco, well Oakland." thing. ugh.
I guess I don’t understand the word ‘pandering’ as it is being used here.
