I’m going right off, I’m completely new to the world of X-Men.
I started picking this up at issue #500, and while not being the most amazing book I’ve ever read – I mean, it was Ok – it was fun, and got me buying the #501. As a new reader, it got me pleased to have those little characters presentation, and that was evidently the purpose. Attract new readers. It really felt like a new beginning and got me confortable, like I’m not going to be wikipedia-ing like crazy to understand something. I knew the characters, but it was cool to feel invited in. I’m not a huge a fan of Land art, but it did the job. I’m actually more thrilled to see wich artist they bring in after this arc. In like San-Francisco too, I think its an amazing town to set the X-Men, and I hope this gets good, because it could, it’s really to early to tell. To sum it up, because I ten to get all mixed up writing my reviews – writing anything actually, I hope you guys don’t mind my “no-structure-everything-coming-out-of-my-head” style.

Ugh, that was a short review. Maybe it tells something about the book too. Let’s wait and see.

  1. Nice review!

I’m curious what motivated you to pick this up if you’ve never read an Xmen book before?

  2. Well being a Marvel afficionado, I wanted to check other titles. I,ve never read an X-men book but I’ve seen the first movie, got to watch the cartoon when I was younger in a baddly-dubbed french version. When I say I’m new to the world of X-Men, I’m talking about the book, because I believe that books and movies – or cartoons for that matter – are very different things. So yeah, I obviously heard about X-Men before but never got the read it.

  3. Cool, another francophone iFanboy! High 5 dude!

  4. @tittom  Cool!   I asked because I’m curious about how well this arc is doing at attracting new readers.  It’s interesting that you were able to read it without feeling like you had to look a lot of things up.  There are characters and story elements in this that go back to older stories, but I think the story is not written in such a way that you need to know the background in order to get it.  That’s a nice balance, and I wish more writers would take this approach.

  5. ohcaroline, yeah, that book was great for that. I don’t but they it feels like they kinda assume the fact that any new reader that picks up the book will not be a total not-knower, but will have some sort of base knowledge of the universe. Doing so, they are sure that the long time reader will not be totally like "MAN, that story again?" so yeah, its a good balance. Sure I had to look up the Celestial in issue 500 because I had no idea what that was. But for those kind of thing, either wiki or Marc, my comic book guy, do the trick. (Yeah, thumbs way up to Marc for being so awesome, and to any person living in Montreal, Studio 9 is the place in town!)

@umpingJupiter : High 5 to you to, man ! You speak french or you just love french-speaking geeks?

  6. I looked up Empath after (actually during) issue 501 because i was curious, but I didn’t need to know any of that.  (And I’ve read ‘The Eternals’ and still don’t understand the celestial).

  7. Just checked it, wow, I didn’t even realise that was Empath. I looked up the whole Celestial thing on wiki and all it did is make me want to invest myself more in the Marvel Galaxy Universe. I’m maybe planning on buying the Annihilation books..Have you read them, are the good?

  8. The Annihilation books are good. Are the Celestials in it though, I can’t remember? There are some huge celestial-like things. Galactacus’ peers I think maybe. Technically, I think that means they are before the Celestials, but his is way deep in nerdville now, and I don’t think it matters much anyway.

I didn’t realize it was Empath, though I recognized the name de la rocha, and I’m ashamed to say I wiki’d it as well. It did add to the story. If you’ve ever read those early New Mutants, it adds a little something. If you haven’t, I don’t know if they’ve been trade’d or not.
