The moment this series was announced to be rebooted, I was so giddy with excitement. The line up made absolutely no sense, but who am I to complain? To have Deadpool and Fantomex in the same group will cause so much problems or will bring more fun to the series. (Depending on your like/hatred for those two) The overall plot sounded intriguing too, but what really got me excited was….well being excited. It has been years since I’ve looked forward to anything X related with Marvel so it almost came a must buy.

Right off the bat, Remender goes for the juggular with me by making it full on Deadpool. By the time the issue ended, I think Rememder went to the well with him way too much. But what was there was pretty funny to be honest, he has a good voice for him. Same goes for Fantomex; in the beginning it’s great to read him and it’s been a while to see him more of a joy to read and not annoying. But after awhile his ‘wit’ is used to much and it got old to read fast. The other characters in this, I felt myself really not caring much about. It’s funny how this is advertised as Wolverine’s team, yet it looks like Angel is really the man in charge. At least that’s what I got out of this. Everyone just reads generically and Psychlocke is a bore; just not fun to read at all. The problem is that while this issue gets very boring to read towards the end; the reveal at the end makes me want to read more. So it’s a very loose balancing act going on with my interest with this series already.

For some reason I’ve never been much of a fan with Opena’s artwork. It definitely looks good; with the layouts and the action sequences. I mean the beginning with Deadpool is drawn very well and it gets your interest. But when it comes to when the issue slows down a bit, where characters just talk, his art just isn’t that impressive. You get to see a lot of his faults; when it comes from the faces of the characters, or shotty inking, and he does some lazy background designs at time. But when the ball gets rolling again it starts to look better. The inking is a bit of a problem here, as it just makes the issue seem more dark then it should and characters do look off. In the end, there are good things about Opena for me, but there are also a good amount of things wrong with him in his style.

I’m torn with this series, I really am. If this was just a Deadpool/Fantomex team up series then I would definitely read it. Remender has a great handle on the two, but he needs to tone down the jokes a bit because it does become too much after a while. The other characters, the more integral one’s I suppose you can say, are just not interesting to read either. The art is also a mixed bag as well, and it definitely doesn’t keep the series from being interesting. But what does keep the series interesting is the premise, and the thought of even more action with the group…..Maybe one more issue is needed to fully realize the potential of this series. As it is now, it’s not that impressive of a first issue I thought it could be.

Story: 2 - Average
Art: 3 - Good

Comments

  1. I bought this issue.  I just don’t know enough about the villain to understand what’s going on though!  I never read any X-Force before.

  2. The second sentence of this review is hilarious.
