There are two things Bendis does as well as anybody: violent, graphic, sexually explicit noir/crime stories... and mushy superhero in love stories. This is the latter.
Actually, the meat of the story is actually Spidey, some cops and Ultimate Mysterio, who is cooler than Mysterio ever was (even counting when Kevin Smith made him D-List loser-cool in "Daredevil".) But it's bookended by the *gasp* will-they-or-won't-they discussions of Peter and Mary Jane. (This is Spider-Man, Marvel's wholesome family-friendly cash-cow. Just guess if they-did-or-they-didn't.) But this one makes you fall in love with Peter and MJ all over again, and suddenly "Brand New Day" doesn't seem like such a great idea (or it seems like a better idea if the whole mushy goal was to give us the chance to see grown-up 616 Peter and Mary Jane find each other again.) Oh, and for good measure, Ultimate Jessica Jones pops in again, laying the groundwork for future stories. Mysterio, uncaptured at the end, promises to do the same.
I liked the David Lafuente manga inspired art. His action is kinetic, his teenagers looked like teenagers, and the man clearly has serious chops. It still looks manga-ish, though, which I don't usually go for, and I'm not sure I'd want to see him on the book on a monthly basis. I could see him growing on me, though. Real good stuff, but might be an acquired taste.
Let's admit it... we all bought this Annual for the mushy stuff, and that delivered, just like issue #13 and "The Letter". So... kudos to Bendis. Sometimes he gives us monkeys doing the unspeakable and ants devouring poor Scott Lang... and sometimes he gives us a couple of young insecure kids in painfully honest high school love. (And that "Embrace Change" joke was pretty badass, too.)

Great review Race, agree with you on all fronts.
I also want to add for the people who love BND and state that the reason that retcon had to occur cause there was no stories for MJ and Peter anymore: Look at this series. Eight long and great years of USM with a love life of MJ/Peter for the ‘spine’ of the storylines. Yes I know we had the whole Kitty Pride angle for some issues: But MJ was still a big factor in those stories too!
So the thought that the stories of MJ and Peter in a relationship cant be told anymore in 616 continuity is just a uber-lazy idea.
I’ll add to that, I think JMS was doing the best work with the Peter/MJ relationship that had ever been done, at least since their forced/shotgun wedding. I’d be willing to be that’s one of the reasons he was so annoyed by "One More Day". He had spent so much time and creative energy on building up this relationship into something real and strong, and then editorial decided to blink it out of existence. Although I suppose the official line is that those stories "still happened", it’s just the mass perception of reality that changed. I don’t know.
Well whatever the case is with OMD and perception of reality is in that comic. The fact is to me that USM still is the better Spider-Man title only because Bendis isnt retconning his work to make more interesting stories. I guess the BND supporters could say that that the Ultimate version is just rehashing stories or reworking them so they arent that original. But some of these stories are still more entertaining then Peter being a lonely single guy with barely a job.
But when you read stuff like the last two ASM issues and they have practically nothing to do with BND or OMD, they are some of the most entertaining issues I’ve read. Maybe they should just write issues instead of focusing on Parker’s new life?
One More Day wasn’t about the relationship, it was about the marriage.
Two completely different things.
I need a macro.
@conor: Then why isnt MJ even part of this BND? I mean they could still be dating like they are in USM. I know she was in that Paperdoll arc but I mean like she is a permant main character.
USM is clearly the better Spidey title, even with BND being successful. And I think BND will only be completely successful if they go BACK to OMD and Mephisto. That needs to have repercussions.
And I understand why they undid the marriage, but I think JMS proved that Peter beind married to MJ was not a problem in telling good stories. He really got a lot of mileage out of their marriage and relationship. Other stuff he did, not so successful. But he used the marriage as well as anyone. They had a really interesting relationship in his books. And hey! If readers want single, young Peter, there’s USM right there. It was the best of both words.
That having been said, BND has been good, and more people are happy with ASM now than they’ve been in a long time, so what do I know?
