i’ve read Lemire’s early stuff (lost dogs, the nobody), dabbled in Sweet Tooth and Animal Man and – to be brutally honest – I liked and enjoyed Essex County, but didn’t quite understand all the praise heaped upon it. Lemire’s art has always been distinctive and unique, but I’ve never connected with his writing as much.

In fact, I was starting to think there was more hype around Lemire’s works than it deserved. Perhaps, the real issue here, is that I haven’t really enjoyed Lemire’s choice of subject matter, until now that is.

Those thoughts have been blasted away with Trillium. The art was incredible. Such range; one moment you feel yourself completely thrown into an Indiana Jones type adventure story, the next you are so deep into outer space [ i actually gasped for air when I hit that double page spread in ‘The Scientist’] that you linger on every detail.

Masterful first issue, superb writing, held up to a shine by raw, confident art,
and the colour! It’s like Lemire and Jose Villarrubia’s brains collided to form one, incredible LeRrubia Borealis.

This book gets a 4.99, losing that 0.01 for the incredibly banal vertigo ads placed in there, which come across like some 60 year old Narc. trying to score pot off some teenaged milling about outside a 7-11.

Thank you Jeff, for a brilliant and dazzling first issue. This shit’s the Trillium.
