The crossover no body wanted!

Remember the good old days of Deadpool? I mean the days with Kelly and Preist doing a marvelous job doing humor in a comic book? Dont get me wrong. Daniel Way has done a pretty impressive job makinf Deadpool relevent again, but sometimes I wish that more then one writer can do just as an impressive job as another. Mike Benson proved to us that he cant write Deadpool and the day I pick up the upcoming Deadpool mini by him is the day I swear off comics forever. But now Diggle has arrived to try and salvage what Benson did last week and well….it’s kind of an improvement….

This isnt a bad issue per say, just average at best. Granted I havent read Thunderbolts since Warren Ellis did a fucking good job making me care for the team so many years ago….But this new team is just something I dont care about. Mainly because I dont even know who the hell they are. Granted I know of this Black Widow and Ant-Man but it’s not like I really know them; I know their more famous versions so I just know them by name only…Either Diggle or Way (I gotta think Way had a handle with this issue in some regard) thought the same thing cause Deadpool was basically making jokes the whole time on not knowning who the hell this team is. If Way didnt have a handle on the outline for Diggle’s issues then I think it’s pretty ballsy to be only your 3rd issue in on Thunderbolts and joke on how your team is irrelevent. There are some good jokes in there, like the pre-mentioned ‘who the hell are you?’ quips to actuall a great realization by Diggle that Osborn’s ‘intel’ for killing the Skrull Queen is Bullshit defined. But this is really just a huge fight scene, pausing for a moment to try and get inside the mind of the Thunderbolts (and failing), then another fight scene. Ho-Hum.

What made this issue somewhat easier to handle is the art. Bong Dazo….and if that is his real name then I feel sorry for him….has some potential to be a good artist. His pencils arent always the best, his Deadpool looks like a man wearing a red sock over his head sometimes…but even with the kinetic pace he had to keep up with he does an impressive job putting in some nice detail in the panels. The backgrounds look very nice and detailed but what got me was the inking and coloring. It’s very bright and colorful and at least it keeps you interested to keep flipping the page. I know Dazo/Pimentel/Martin arent the regular art team on this book but I would like to see them do the regular Deadpool series if (god forbid) Medina had to leave.

So overall this issue doesnt really hurt the crossover, but it’s nothing special. Diggle is still a writer I am very ‘meh’ on and this crossover did do two things: 1) Diggle would make a very medicore Deadpool ongoing. 2) There is no way I will pick this series up again once this crossover is done. So it isnt great but at least next time we got Way and Medina to bring this crossover back up to speed.

Story: 2 - Average
Art: 4 - Very Good
