As a long time not-Superman fan (which is not the same as a Bizarro fan), I don’t know quite how to express how solid this World Of New Krypton is.  I read and enjoyed issue one, but reading that issue is in no way necessary to understanding this one.  In fact, that one guy who lives under the rock in the desert who’s never heard of comics or movies or Superman.  Even he would enjoy this comic.  The backstory is irrelevant.  This is just a really good story about a man forced into the military battling with his superiors.  It is, essentially, the Superman story I wanted after reading Space Ghost.  And the first few pages seen to set up a possible impending crossover.

But, forgetting what a great job Rucka is doing with the story, I feel like the real hero of this book is the colorist, Brad Anderson.  Woods’s pencils are great, though he does, like most pencillers suffer from sameface.  But the shading job and the colors give a personality to each individual’s face that the lines don’t.  And the page where Kal-El comforts his aunt is stunning.  Intentionally blurry background shots and the characters’ shadows were a great visual decision.

This is just an all-around fantastic comic.  Great for Kryptofiles and haters alike.
