I had some minor complaints about the first issue of this series, though I was in the minority in doing so, but I have to say that this has all settled in nicely.  Rucka is giving us exactly what I had hoped for.  A somewhat subtle, cerebral story that somehow manages to be straightforward and sensical without tipping its hand or becoming obvious about its direction.  All the details he provides as plot points get explored thoroughly in an expedient manner and, through it all, Superman proves that his might lies not just in his brawn, but in his brains as well.  For nearly any other writer, Superman’s identity would become muddled when set against the backdrop of ten thousand Kryptonians, likely causing the story to shift focus away from the man of steel.  That, of course, would be a disservice.  Not just because it does say “Superman” on the cover, but because if he’s not to be in any of his other titles, fans deserve as much of him here as possible.  Because it’s Rucka, and because this story is so well-though out, not only do we get a constant stream of undiluted Kal-El, but we get little flashes of something you don’t expect to see in regards to a character who’s been around for 70 years, even in a new paradigm such as this.  Character development.  It’s truly a feat.

Story: 5 - Excellent
Art: 4 - Very Good
