If there's anything I've taken from Geoff Johns, it's that he knows how to write the heck out of a "This won't end well" scenario, a situation that looks tame and nice at first glance before you realize a quarter-second in that there's no way s--t isn't going down from this. He did it at the end of the first issue of Infinite Crisis, the end of the Sinestro Corps Special, with the "Under Gog" storyline and now with New Krypton. Along with James Robinson and Sterling Gates, we're seeing the groundwork being laid for something that's just pointing towards disaster and pain which I'm coming to find out is what Geoff Johns does best.
Most of the Special, to me, is all about oncoming dread, that feeling that things are set on a course that will go horribly wrong very soon. At face value, Superman should be happy about the fact that 100,000 of his fellow Kryptonians are now living on the North Pole. However, we're talking about a race of demigods, intensely nationalistic and proud of their genetic heritage. They don't understand humanity and don't appear to want to. They really don't seem all that concerned about the local life (as evidenced by the whale) and are even calling the planet "New Krypton" already. Even in the joy of the Kara/Zor/Allura reunion, it's almost immediately interrupted with the knowledge that is a dangerous situation that simply can't end well. Just as his most vocal sage passes on, Superman is now in the most tenuous scenario I've seen him in for quite a while. Add to that the new alliance of Lex and General Lane in some creepy Cadmus-esque shadow organization set against Superman and the Kryptonians and there's a powder keg situation ready to go off.
Obviously, between the writing and the art, it was going to be hard to top this book this week. Everything is written and drawn so nicely and well that it's almost shameful. If you haven't been picking up any of the Superman books or you're sad over the end of All-Star Superman, this would be a great jumping on point for you as "New Krypton" opens up with a bang.
