This is what makes sense to me: a book with impact. It's why I don't get off on the whole BND thing, wherein it was going to be this great change for Spider-Man, it really only put him back in the silver age: Spider-Man fights villain, Spider-Man defeats villain, wash, rinse, repeat. That's it. It doesn't change anything.
The Secret Invasion has changed everything and with just one issue! I want to say I don't remember the last time a book gave me chills down my spine, but that would be a lie because I remember Sinestro Corps War and WWH quite fondly for doing just that. Funny I should mention WWH in such context; most people seem to think WWH sucked. And it did, but only in that the ending was so predictable and overall it had no impact on the Marvel U (the Hulk may be gone, red, or whatever, but it's so hard to tell thanks to the sluggish pace of the new series).
I'm here to talk about Secret Invasion though, and that is what I now shall do.
In this book each page brought so much to the table. I stared at each panel intently, enjoying Leinil Yu's scratchy take on shading just a little more than usual (What can I say? I like my art clean). This is probably the fourth time I've seen the page with skrull Elektra being examined by Reed and Hank since last month and it was the first time it made sense, but only after having finished the issue.
And just when everyone was convinced that Jessica Drew's a skrull thanks to her actions in Mighty Avengers she's been proven otherwise. Will she be the one who brings Earth's Mightiest Heroes back together? I hope so. Then everyone can stop whining about Civil War. What she has done is brought both teams together, for better or worse, against the common foe. If only they knew who the foe was! That, my friends, is IMPACT.
I think some people recognized Dugan to be a skrull early on, but who suspected Jarvis? You know I'm kickin' myself for having missed it and so will the Mighty Avengers once they've realized it. It's so simple and it really worked out in the Skrull's favor as he easily implants the alien virus to all of Mr. Starks enterprises, including his armor.
That's when things just go crazy. I won't go over all the things that happen, but before you know it Mar-Vell's on Thunderbolt Mountain, Sue Richards (skrull) has opened a huge portal to the negative zone right where the Baxter Building used to be and Cap's back, along with some old friends. The big question is made even bigger: "Who do you trust?"
One thing's for certain: Hank Pym's a skrull. It explains why he could care less that Tony wasn't bothering to divulge any information. He already knew. Hank's undoubtedly the shady character who each Initiative team's skrull member has been coordinating with. Soon the people of earth will regret their demand for the Superhuman Registration Act and I can't wait to see it happen.
Art: 4 - Very Good
The thing that gave Dugan away in this issue was his dialogue. Dugan doesn’t talk like an aw-shucks Southerner. He talks like a self-deprecating ’40’s tough guy. The difference isn’t subtle, and Bendis threw us long-term Marvel fans a plum in the first few pages.
I still can’t figure out the Mar-Vell thing (especially since the miniseries is still ongoing). Any ideas where he fits in here?
I think that Mar-Vell found out that there was a Skrull in Thunderbolts. Maybe Norman Osborn???
There have been hints that Mar-Vell may be a Skrull in the Captain Marvel mini, but we’ll have to wait till the 5th issue comes out to know for sure.
