I’ve been such a fan of this book since #1. It gives me everything in an Avengers title that no one else has been giving me. After some exciting action on Mars, Brubaker is turning things down a notch. The problem with Nick Fury joining these evil group of villains has not been addressed yet. Just what is going on with the cigar chomping, eye-patch wearing, badass of SHIELD?

Turns out, there is more to this ‘Nick Fury’ then just looks. Brubaker gives us a great origin of how this new Fury came into power. Out of all of the issues this has the most ‘espionage’ feel to it. There’s action, suspense, chasing, and an overall sense of mystery to the whole issue. The further we go along and the further Nick Fury explains everything; it really becomes an intriguing read. Now I’m not sure if Brubaker is completely creating a new character or if this is reshaping some of Marvel history. But it’s written in a way, a fantastic way, where it feels like Brubaker hasn’t done anything to make this character ‘feel’ new in the grand scheme of things. This new Fury feels like he has always been around in one shape or form. He’s also mixing in some Golden Age Marvel history with the reveal at the end of this. So if you need some more backstory, go read the Marvels Project to get a better idea.

A while ago I read the first two hardcovers of Gotham Central. I totally fell in love with Michael Lark’s artwork and I was so happy to hear he was going to be apart of this issue. I also recently read the Iron Fist series he (and Fraction) wrote and I fell in love with David Aja. Stefano Gaudiano……well okay I haven’t read anything of his yet. But with all three blending their styles together it is hard to tell who did what. Which is a good thing, because it doesn’t distract you from the overall story. But all three guys are just so good with working with the writing style of Brubaker. They know how to do the right angles, the right panel layouts, and overall just make everything click with Brubaker’s script. I’ve grown accustomed to Mike Deodato on this series; but if any of these guys were to start on this series full time I would love to see it.

In the end, I still don’t have an idea what is going on with this Serpent Society. Why are these characters from the Golden Age keeping a look out on these Avengers? What do they have in mind for the new Nick Fury? All of these questions haven’t been answered yet; but it isn’t frustrating at all it haven’t been answered yet. Brubaker gives us a fantastic origin story in this and the artwork by all three men just keep this as one of the best Marvel series on the stand.

Story: 5 - Excellent

  1. Yea, really feel like Lark is a superstar artist, and I’ve really become a fan of that style of drawing.  It’s a brand of art which I think maybe Alex Maleev paved the way for, which is why Lark’s transition unto Daredevil was so seamless; and now we have the privilege of seeing Aja, who’s work on Iron Fist I agree was great, and Laurence Campbell, guy who’s doing Deadpool Pulp who I never heard of before, but who’s stuff I really enjoyed.

  2. Loved this issue and the art work, can’t wait for more
