Our group of avengers find themselves in peril as an old friend returns with an agenda they do not want to be involved in. All the while things get worse as the Phoenix Force approaches ever so closer to Hala.

PRO:
Renato Guedes continues to entertain with his wonderfully lush art and solid storytelling. Mr. Remender’s dialogue and inner-character dialogue is equally noteworthy.

CONS:
Digging up old graves. We’ve seen some hero rebirths before and i have my reservations about Captain Marvel being reborn in secret avengers? Why not a more prominent book? I might be missing something here otherwise its not a memorable as i would hope it would have been.

  1. I’m willing to run with the Captain Marvel rebirth, in part because I don’t think it will stick. This is the kind of thing Remender writes well. Like some of his recent android stories in Secret Avengers, much of his work in X-Force, and basically all of Fear Agent, what we have is an implicit questioning of what makes someone “authentically” human, or for that matter authentically who they are. We know Ms. Marvel is going to take on the mantel of Captain Marvel herself, so bringing back Mar-Vel for this story seems like an appropriate way to set the stage for her. And it opens up an interesting angle on the Phoenix as the Kree on Hala are welcoming the Force, much as the X-Men are. It strikes me that modern Avengers writers are really fascinated with the old Avengers Kree-Skrull War stories, and mining them for inspiration might not be a bad idea in this case. I also agree that the art is excellent and suits Remender’s voice well.
