First, upfront, I should say that I thought bringing Jason Todd back was an idiotic idea. And the way he has been handled as some whiney brat killing criminals just because they are criminals was wearing very thin after the under the hood storyline. It seems he was brought back but and no one had a clear idea as what to do with him, or what was his age. At times he was portrayed close to dick Grayson's age. God that horrible Nightwing arc with one year later, what shit, did he really turn into some monster? Don't know how he got out of that or care. Jason Todd to me was a symbol of what was wrong with comics these past few years, an overused character with no direction, or any personality what-so-ever, all because he has a chip on his shoulder doesn't he is a fleshed out character. Just having some character traits is different than developing a character. But Roy Harper I liked, except for what was done to him in the last two years, the swinging a dead cat and killing hobos while high is certainly a low point in story telling and for the character. Green Arrow I like, and Speedy/Red Arrow/Roy is a character I have a fondness for. I see he has his arm back, so that horrible JT Krul is no longer in existence. I wonder if he even had a daughter? He certainly has no qualms about killing people given that two page spread of him fighting way out. I see arrows in necks, heads and hearts. I see one in an eye too (and this book is rated T, not T ) Roy even has some trendy tattoos to show he's cool, a bad ass. My question on that is why even wear a mask? Those tats are very clear identifying marks for someone that wants to keep his ID a secret. But here's what I think of the book. Art was okay, busy and stiff with a flair of Michael Turner's elongated bodies. Its fine, but not my bag, I'm sure 13yr old boys will think its cool. The story was light, There was a prison break, a fight, alien girl has sex, and Jason gets ambushed. It plays on plot points more than a sense of story structure. There's nice banter between Roy and Jason, but what bothered me was why isn't Roy the leader? Unless he was de-aged to be about Jason's age. Why did Red Hood bust him out of prison, but doesn't take him on the next mission? So did he even need him? A plot point discarded, unless it is explained later, but it feels discarded. My questions are: Was Roy even Green Arrow's sidekick? Was there even a Teen Titians with Vic, Gar, Starfire and Dick? The banter between Roy and Starfire suggests so even though that it looks like Vic was and will always be a Justice League member in this reboot. Editorial slip? And who is Dennis, don't remember that Titan. But the biggest flaw of this book is what Starfire was turned into, a mindless bimbo in a skimpy outfit who casually sleeps around. Gone is the character we cared about that Wolfman/Perez created. She's just a hot model that kills people without a whiff of concern, guilt, regret or even some emotion. And if Roy knew her why does he question her on what she remembers and doesn't remember, you would think that he would know that already. Poor storytelling.(yes she always wore a skimpy outfit, but this literally only has a strap on each breast) Not going to buy issue 2. A step up for Roy, but a huge step down for Starfire. Could care less about Jason Todd. BTW: With Titans:Games released as well this week it really is clear on what a travesty this new take on Starfire is.
