One of the joys of working in a store, and not being the one who has to do the ordering, is that I don’t always know the premise of a new comic when it comes out. So I can pick up a comic, blind, and either enjoy it or…not enjoy it with little expectation.

All I knew about Planetoid when I picked it up was the it was likely to be sci-fi, and the writing/penciling/inking/lettering were all done by the same person I’ve never heard of. The last time I saw a project like that it was Hickman’s “Nightly News”.

Planetoid starts with a lot of focus on art as story. With only one actual character, it makes sense that there isn’t a lot of dialog. Instead, there are some hauntingly detailed pencils (the inks and colors are also great, but I’d love to see the original pencils for some of these pages).

When the unexpected happens (which I suppose is somewhat expected if you’ve read the previews or the description on the site), it’s actually unexpected.

The story is very straightforward and simple, but every aspect (except the spelling and proofreading near the end) seems worried over in all the right ways.

Story: 4 - Very Good
Art: 5 - Excellent

Comments

  1. I may have to check this out.

  2. I agree, the story is simple but fun, effective and well constructed. The art is pretty special. I know Garing spent months on this issue getting everything to look just the way he wanted and it shows. The detail is fantastic.

  3. Great review. This is a great book.

    Watch out for Garing.
