That my friends is the day fun died. Because all of YOU, that’s right I’m talking to YOU specifically, didn’t buy OMAC. What could possibly be the most fun comic in the last several years is now gone forever. Sure the character might stay around, but it isn’t the same knowing Dan Didio and Keith Giffen’s (insane) vision will never return.

Maybe this issue was a bit rushed to get to the ending. Maybe this issue made just as much sense as the previous seven, i.e. not much. But you know what? I don’t give a shit because I had too much fun to care. My animalistic side must be showing because when I see OMAC just destroy everything in his path I just feel fucking good about myself. The story isn’t deep at all but why have any type of story? Just have Didio/Giffen write a fortress called ‘Exposition Palace’ and that’s all the justification we’ll need. This series from Day 1 was just an excuse to give us a big, stupid comic book to read and they succeeded with flying colors for eight straight issues.

Let’s get to the real nitty-gritty on why this final issue was so fantastic: Keith Giffen’s art. For six issues he has given us some wonderful pages and moments throughout this series. For his final issue, he delivers what could be some of the best work in his career. The first thing you see when you turn the page is beautiful with a great, Kirby homage of the character OMAC and the Kirby Dots surrounding the issue. Then you turn the page and you get an ORGASMIC double page spread of OMAC running pass guards. If that isn’t up for ‘Best Panel/Page of the Week’ on this site then I’ll sue! Giffen seriously goes all out in this issue to leave his mark on the series. The action is kinetic, the designs are absolutely gorgeous, the Kirby homages are plentiful, and the inks/colors by Scott Koblish and Hi-Fi make it A material from beginning to end. Yes there are comic artists that I like (Declan Shalvey) and comic artists I love (Rob Guillory) and they provide their own beauty to their work. But I can safely say I will never find the joy that Keith Giffen and his team brought with (almost) eight issues in this series.

302 people 1 (i.e. me) bought this series to the bitter end. We all know what we came for with this series with the ridiculous writing and the GORGEOUS art and we loved every second of it. But now the ship is sailing away and we’re once again back at tedium in our lives. I have no idea why Didio, with all of his power at DC, couldn’t go up to someone and say: “Yeah this series sells poorly but fuck you I’ll keep it alive for as long as I’m writing it” and let it last more then eight issues. Clearly Didio, Giffen, and others had a ball creating each issue as we did reading it. For once, shouldn’t that matter the most instead of sales and figures? Maybe if we ever see these two reunite again Didio will learn that lesson. As for now, I’ll play myself out with some Incredible Hulk music as OMAC walks sadly away in the distance…

Story: 5 - Excellent
Art: 5 - Excellent

  1. I am going to miss this series with a fury. This has been THE most joyful thing for me out of the New 52. That’s not even because most of the New 52 sucked. It’s because this book was DAMN GOOD.

I know people who claim to be die hard DC fans who didn’t enjoy this series. WHY!? If you claim to like DC, why skip out on the new book that is probably THE richest in DC history?

So, so much potential for this series is gone now. They had 16 issues plotted. This book could have heralded so much for the DC Universe, but people wanted their 90’s hackjob rehashed bullshit instead, and comics as a whole are worse off for it today.

  2. Extremely disappointed to see this go. It may have been my favorite of the new 52 just because of how much fun it was to read. I hope O.M.A.C. is able to make a return someday. I still can’t understand why people didn’t like this more.

  3. I didn’t catch this review when you first posted it, but it’s well done.

I really loved this comic, more than likely my favorite in the relaunch. I knew this issue was going to be bittersweet, but seeing so many threads laid out, even in the final issue, was just painful. O.M.A.C. was a great comic with a lot more greatness still in it; I really hope the ideas Keith and Dan plotted here aren’t horribly mishandled in another comic (like JLI or something). It drives me crazy to hear people call this book simple “Dumb Fun” when it’s so masterfully crafted. It reads fast, fun, and energetic, but there was a lot of complexity to what was being done in this comic. Godspeed, O.M.A.C.
