After reading through a couple of reviews for this issue, I’m compelled to stick my neck out and take one on the chin. This issue was really fantastic. While the story doesn’t necessarily have any sort of plot movement, it’s a really nice reflection of just who Dick Grayson is. If you put the story into perspective, this is a story of Dick dealing with his loss. We have to keep in mind that while Dick lost a mentor with Batman’s passing, he’s also lost his father, so when we find him in this issue being reflective of his life, it’s no surprise that the character has a lot of things on his mind. I found this issue to be very zen. This is the character taking a deep breath and gaining perspective on the situation. It’s often how many of us have to deal with the daily stresses of our lives, and I felt this added a very human element to the character. Sure it wasn’t action packed, but it was an emotional catharsis for both the character and the reader. I don’t want to comment too much on Kramer’s art. While he normally is one of my favorite artists, I felt his art was a little bit weak in this issue. There was just nothing that stood out, although some of his more emotional panels were superb. This isn’t the best Kramer I’ve ever seen, but it’s also not the worst. It was a good effort in my book.

What knocked this book out of the park was the Origins and Omens back up story. This was simply fantastic, and it completely captured Dick and Barbara in they’re element. The art was a great compliment to the light hearted story, and added a nice element of goofiness to the banter playing out between the two characters. It was honestly one of the best 5 page stories I’ve read in a long time, and it really is a nice touch to the finale for this series.

Story: 5 - Excellent
Art: 4 - Very Good

  1. This is my favorite DC title , and if Dick Grayson does not become the new Batman ( with Tomasi on writing chores ) then I will probably give up all my titles .

  2. I can’t agree more with this reivew. Tomasi wrote a great emotional story. I am really going to miss this title.

  3. boo hoo, JK

  4. Great review, Neb. I agree with all your points.
