Brian Michael Bendis does his usual stellar work in issue #38 of New Avengers as he writes the long-simmering break-up between Luke Cage and Jessica Jones. Their argument rings true as they vacillate between anger and pleading with each other to back down. It's as if each desperately wants the other to change their minds, but knows deep-down that they will not back down.
The groundwork for the Secret Invasion event is further established in this issue as well, with the feeling of paranoia gripping the "New" team spreading over to the "Mighty" team as well. A distance and tension between Ms. Marvel and the rest of team is growing, fueled by her decision to once again let Cage walk free and his reveal of the Skrulls' existence. It will be interesting to see how the two teams will each deal with the paranoia and distrust in their ranks over the coming months.
While Bendis' writing was excellent in this issue, the pencils by Michael Gaydos completely came off the rails half-way through the issue. The pages featuring Luke Cage and Jessica Jones were expressive and well rendered, and Gaydos clearly can capture a facial expression. Unfortunately, the panels following the arrival of the Mighty team were marked by a lack of detail and an almost hurried quality. Ares in particular looked generic and unlike any of his recent characterizations in Mighty Avengers.
