It feels fitting that a relationship, one of the most noteable in recent years, should (seemingly) end at the hands of the two creators who brought them together in the first place. Jessica Jones' arc in the pages of Alias made her one of the best defined characters in modern superhero comics, and the fact that aside from a few guest spots in other people's books she has been handled almost exclusively by writer Brian Michael Bendis means that her arc and her relationship with Luke Cage have been the vision of one man.
Whether or not it ends here, with Jessica registered and decamped to Stark Tower one the other side of the Avengers divide from her husband and Luke refusing to admit defeat from the Civil War, it feels like the end. With art by Michael Gaydos, who along with Bendis helped define Jones, this feels like the end of a story that began in Alias. Amoungst the event driven comics, and Bendis' own ramp up to Secret Invasion, this is a human story in a way that despite the fact that Ms. Marvel shows up and there's a good deal of talk about Skrulls this issue is as low key and grounded as anything in Alias.
This is how to end a comic book marriage, if that's what Bendis is doing here. No magic. No deals with the devil. Just two people both wanting to do the right thing, with very different opinions on how to do that realizing that maybe what's special between them no longer works. If Peter and MJ had broken up this way it would have felt like it meant something. This means something especially since I've always liked Jessica Jones, she's flawed and makes mistakes and the tragic part of this is that Luke Cage may have been the first good thing to come along for her since readers got to know her, and that to avoid making a mistake for her child she risks losing it.
There are a few light moments that releave the tension of what is basically an issue long breakup. The scene with the rest of the New Avengers moving into an apartment owned by Danny Rand was funny, and the touch with nobody knowing who the leader was is one of those nice connected universe touches that Bendis does so well. At the root though this is about Jones and Cage, and everything else from Skrulls to jokes about Wendy's is just dressing.
Strip away the Skrulls and the costumes and you have an indie book as personal as anything you might find in black and white from a minor company. That Bendis can switch between writing about Venom bombs to this is amazing.
This would be my pick of the week.
