I’m a sucker.  I admit it, throw in a retro Marvel segment and if it’s done well, you’ve got me.  Get Ron Frenz to draw it in a 70’s style and it’s even better.  Beyond the throw back, though, this issue also pulls off something that isn’t done much.  It stays true to what seemed like either a very “spoiler-y” or very gimmicky cover when it was released in Previews months ago but throws in a surprising twist that makes you glad saw the preview.  Ms. Marvel is a Skrull.  Though the Skrull has not yet replaced the original, which means there are two Ms. Marvels running around.

There is a lot going on besides that and while I have not been reading this series prior to this issue, and there are subplots from previous issues that come up, it is still very easy to follow.  With Secret Invasion looming, this is sure to be a series that you will want to follow and this is the perfect issue to jump on.

  1. Great review dude. I just may pick this up now.

  2. More people should be reading this book.

  3. Agreed, Ms. Marvel is one of the best books Marvel puts out: Brian Reed’s writing is always compelling and the art–whether it’s been by De La Torre, Wieringo (R.I.P.), Lopresti, and now Adriano Melo–is solid.  Glad to see it getting triple digit pulls from iFanboy Nation, and hope it’s not just because this issue is a Secret Invasion tie-in.

Something to note: readers of both New Avengers and Ms. Marvel, might want to read New Avengers first.  It’s not essential by any means, but there is a little, mini bit of continuity between the two books (I think).
