One of my favorite things that team books can do is to pair the main characters off (in a nonromantic sense) and watch how they bounce off of each other. It deepens relationships among the team as a whole--provided that the pairings aren't totally obvious--and it's an interesting way to pass the spotlight around. All that's to say that I quite liked this issue. The dialogue was a little let-me-tell-you-about-my-powers for a third issue, but it's early issues yet, and I respect that this book needs to introduce these characters to folks that aren't familiar with them. But the general fact that Jurgens can pack so much character stuff (even basic character stuff) in an issue that's mostly about the team getting attacked by adorable rock monsters is a really good sign. It's not a perfect issue, though. As I said, the character beats are a little too introductory for my taste, and Jurgens isn't doing a good job capturing Rocket Red, who was in my opinion the best part of Generation Lost. Also: At one point Ice makes an ice sphere around herself and Rocket Red, and then they use it to go underwater. That's not really how ice works, Mr. Jurgens. Lopresti's art, as always, was pretty darn good, though I don't need to see Batman's costume disappearing up his butt anymore than I need to see Ice's disappearing up hers. Lopresti can do a good range of facial expressions, which I feel is really important in a JLI book. On the other hand, it was hard for me to take the adorable rock monsters seriously because of how adorable they were. There's a Digimon that looks just like them, and that was all I could think about. I was a little shaky on this series up until now, but this was a really solid issue, and I'm looking forward to more.
