Sorry, I’m not is the best of moods as I right this review right now so bare with me – there could be a multitude of expletives spewing forth

This comic is fucking stupid.

In a world of great team books like Uncanny X-Force, The Ulitmates, and even Justice League International, I would embarrassed to have my name on the cover of the book. What the fuck is going on with Geoff Johns here? Seriously, I’m not joking. There needs to be a goddamn intervention quick. Hey Mark Wade, Rick Remender, and Jason Aaron, your fellow comic book writer has hit bottom, you need to reach out to him and let him know he is not only hurting himself but the people he loves. It’s time to sit down guys and write a letter to Geoff reminding him of the good times, and also letting him know that if he continues to write shit like Justice League #5 the following will happen: Comics written by Geoff Johns will no longer be welcome in your house. If Geoff Johns calls and wants to do a cross-over with your comic you will turn him away.

This has to be a cry for help. How else can you explain, “WE GOT THIS!”

Holy mother fucking shit of Christ I can’t believe he wrote that. I can’t believe I paid 3.99 to read that.

I don’t who the fuck these heroes are John’s Justice League. That sure as shit isn’t Batman. There is also an imposter posing as Wonder Woman in this book. I mean there has to be. I mean, this must be part of the plot John’s has set up right? Because that sure as shit is not the Wonder Woman I know, or have read or seen an any comic, movie, TV show, cereal box, toy store, EVER!

  1. and yeah, I sure as shit used “sure as shit” too many times. fuck you

  2. and yeah I used “right” instead of “write”. Just goes to show how upset I am!!!!!!!

    😉

  3. Yeah, but how excited for issue 6 are you?!

  4. Yeah.

It’s been interesting to follow people’s continued reactions to Johns’ decline.

He used to be a pretty good writer. At times, he was excellent.

Then he started to get very predictable and formulaic. But people don’t care much, because that was around the time that Blackest Night was coming out. All the hype was kinda justified because the IDEA was cool enough to make up for the lack of content.

But as of 2012? Geoff Johns is like Jeph Loeb now. All juvenile flash and very little substance. Very often, it feels like they’re just mailing it in. They still have perceptible talent, but it’s like the readers have to keep dumbing themselves down or something in order to just be okay with it. And, for me at least, the constant, implicit command to “Turn off your brain!” gets a little intolerable after a while.

But, hey, Justice League is still the best-selling comic out there. Even Josh (who is usually the smartest iFanboy and the most critical of lazy writing) gave issue #1 Pick-of-the-Week honors based, admittedly, off of feel-good hype. And issue #5 still gets basically a 4-star average from the iFanboy users.

So, I don’t see this changing anytime soon. This is just a cycle that things go through. The readers that Johns sheds will instantly recognize his huge decline in quality. Everybody else will keep making excuses, apologizing for Johns’ shortfalls, telling everyone not think but just “have fun”. And I guess that’s okay. But if people had more…um, courage, I think we’d all be a lot better off dropping mediocre titles, picking up more deserving titles, and celebrating things that are worth celebrating rather than living in an atmosphere of hype under the banner of “Turn off your brain! Have fun! Big action movie–ALL THE TIME! Hype!”

    • That having been said, let me ask: Have you checked out John’s work on the new Aquaman? For me, I read it back-to-back with Justice League 5 and couldn’t believe it was the same writer on both titles.

    • I havent read G Johns stuff for half a decade at least (and i only ever read flash).. Im a marvel guy really. However ..I loved his flash then and love everything hes writing now. I figure im buying half the DC 52 and his books are among the best. It could be that your bored with Johns style and or your bored with DC characters. Im starting to feel that way about marvel characters after being a marvel fan for life (up until a few weeks ago). I knew nothing about aquaman, green lantern, cyborg, etc.. so it feels fresh to me. I imagine rehashing origins (team forming) would be annoying if youve already seen it done before.

    • Im pissed because yeah, I like Johns. I loved Blackest Night. I thought his run on Green Lantern, starting with Re-Birth, was fantastic and made me a fan of GL and his world. So when I read that Johns and Lee will be doing Justice League! Holy fuck I’m totally IN!

Then we get this bullshit. And its bullshit. Sure it’s a best selling comic and everything but hey guess what, Clay Akien sold a lot records – see what I mean?

to butcher Megadeth, “Bullshit sales, and we’re buying”.

  5. “Holy mother fucking shit of Christ”…
ha.. you most not be a big Dexter fan ghost. (see Dexter’s sister)
Anyway i get what your saying.. there isnt a whole lot of dialogue in these books to begin with. Like i said before though.. because its fresh for me (i didnt know half the characters beyond that i knew they existed).. Im digging it. Jim Lee’s pencils may be swaying me as well. And I have no idea who wonder woman is or was or will be. So for you im sorry for me.. im happy.

    • not sure I get the Dexter reference (granted I’ve only seen the 1st season).

I have in past reviews said that this JL is the gateway drug into the DC Universe, so I’ll give Johns and Lee that. But for people who have been reading these characters for years, it almost feels like a slap in the face.

    • The Dexter reference is just an allusion to his sister, who swears a lot and invents new curses that don’t always make sense or are just weird.

Like your “Holy mother fucking shit of Christ” 😉

    • ahhh, thanks G1mp. Makes perfect shit damning sense to me now.
      =)

  6. Your reviews are pure gold man. I hate this but I agree with you. Geoff Johns has been brilliant so far on Aquaman and Green Lantern was a fun read for a non-GL reader and newcomer (me), though I dropped GL for personal reasons I still enjoyed the first arc a lot.

Jim Lee is the main reason I haven’t dropped Justice League yet. I hope that when this first arc wraps up and it bumps to the present day, that Geoff Johns’ writing will rise in quality again, cause this is low and too fucking mainstream and dumb.

    • I will concur, Jim Lee has been the reason I’ve continued to pick this up. Well that, and it IS sorta like watching a train wreck, you just can’t look away.

Perhaps I’m also holding on to a glimmer of hope that that Geoff you mentioned, you know the one that wrote that awesome Aquaman and Green Lantern, will show up. He hasn’t yet.

  7. I like Aquaman, but I agree with ghostmann that John’s writing on JL sucks…Wayne revealing his identity to GL? Superman punching out GL in issue #1? Who are these characters? Wonder Woman’s dialogue makes her sound like some kind of woman-child (“MMmmm ICE CREAM?!).

“WE GOT THIS!” was the last straw. Not picking this up any more…
