You’d think Marvel (and DC for that matter) would realize the best tie-in issues for an event are in which there is little tie-in to begin with. Journey Into Mystery has been one of the best titles Marvel have been publishing partially because it has little to do with Fear Itself. Oh there’s a few mentions of a ‘serpent’ here or there but when it comes right down to it, this is all about lil’ Loki. Kieron Gillen and Doug Braithwaite have been telling a great story with Loki trying to reclaim his glory. This issue for this week, is no different.

I’m happy that Gillen is going back to some of the ground he covered when this used to be called ‘Thor’. With Hela and Mephisto back into the title we might be seeing some hot, magic on satan action in future issues. Gillen has a good knack at writing these two and I love how Shakespearian Mephisto is. It’s a lot of fun watching Loki scheming as usual but I did have one little gripe with it. While each issue has to explain what Loki is planning, Gillen was able to balance exposition with furthering the story. Here though it felt like Gillen had to put A LOT of info just to get us to the end of the issue without much happening. I’m sure the next issue will have a lot of fighting involved, I just wish we could’ve had less expositon this time around. No complaints with Braithwaite’s art though as his painted style is perfect for this story.

This is still a great comic to read, even with a little nitpick involved. Keiron Gillen is building up to something big, I can feel it. Along with Doug Braithwaite’s pencils it’s going be a great looking run as we move on. Let’s just hope there are more fun times ahead and less exposition in the near future.

Story: 4 - Very Good
Art: 5 - Excellent
