Let's just get past the fact that Braitwaite snuck Hela's fully exposed boob in the final page—begging me to ask the question: is this a first in a mainstream 616 marvel comic?
Anyways, boobs are great, that's a given, that's not why I wanted to write this review (it's why I get up in morning--zing! Sorry, moving on) Allow me to extrapolate on what it was about this book that made me: grin, laugh, and whisper aloud things like; "whoa", and "ohhh shhhiit!"
Short answer: this comic is bloody brilliant. This is marvel's Thor mythos through a lens of pure unadulterated fantasy. Like the very best works of fiction, the drama and the action of this story are both pushed forward by truly engaging character development. This is Loki's adventure at its core and, in many ways, it is structured like an origin story for the reborn god of mischief. However, it also has an extra dimension which makes it much more interesting than a typical tale of a character's origin: its protagonist is at turns fighting against his former self when he can, while embracing his natural inclinations fully at times in which he begins to enjoy his adventure, leading him to completely forget about his internal fight for morality. Essentially, he is a character who KNOWS he is in the middle of an origin story and he is grappling with whether or not he CARES. Furthermore, though this is a "tie-in" to Fear Itself, it is infinitely more dramatic than the aforementioned mini-series due to the fact that this book is character-driven. And make no mistake, Journey Into Mystery DOES tie directly into Fear Itself, but it in NO WAY requires that the reader be reading the event. In fact, this book manages to provide further context to Fear Itself while simultaneously existing ENTIRELY on its own—an amazing tightrope act handled beautifully by Gillen. I'd actually go as far as to call this title the REAL "event" of Fear Itself.
Indeed, this mounting war with "the serpent"—which actually feels like a cosmic-level war in this title, much more effectively than in Fear Itself proper—seems to be placing this reincarnated and PERHAPS redefined Loki in a position in which acting like his former self may be necessity if he is to best protect Asgard.
The story is paced remarkably well and Gillen layers the tale with characters both well established and new to the Thor mythos--but each character have clearly defined, though often conflicting, motives. All the while, the reader is transported through various fantastically illustrated (and populated) landscapes provided by Doug Braithwaite's pencils. To call him a perfect fit for this story is a massive understatement. His surreal and otherworldly take on the nine realms is highly immersive while still maintaining the kinetic, forward-moving action that gives motion to the panels.
This is officially my new favorite book on the stands. It transports me right back to the good old days of diving into a comic and experiencing the adventure to be found within. My standards for story composition have risen greatly since those youthful summer days on the deck, sitting next to a stack of comics; so finding a book that can melt away all my criticisms and plug me into an adventure so successfully has me ending this review with a sincere THANK YOU to Kieron Gillen and Doug Braithwaite. This is a shining example of why I love comics.
Side note: "I can pretend to be as much a villain as anyone." Fantastic character moment, love how he is convincing himself that its all just an act so that he can do exactly what he wants to do. Just setting itself up to get better and better.
