I’ve probably been one of Fraction’s biggest cheerleaders on this book.  That being said, this issue was a definite fumble.  I really don’t know why Fraction wrote this.  The premise makes no sense at all.  Peter Parker decides, out of the blue presumably, to freelance for Frontline with Urich on a trip to the blast site of Stane’s attack.  From there, Iron Man and Spidey pseudo-team-up to pick off the other parts of the supertech black market.  I don’t know why Peter keeps tagging along throughout.  If it’s just to get “that” picture, he’s a douche for exploiting another superhero and former employer at the most inopportune time.  If it’s another reason, I don’t know what it is.

The plot itself is pretty light yet devoid of any fun.  It lacks coherence and sensibility.  It’s just one quick confrontation with a c-lister after another.  The dialogue feels odd and confusing.  The team-up is noticeably meatless, devoid of any sort of tension or weight it should have, given how the friendship of these two fractured.  Add in the OMD situation into the works and I’m scratching my head over what’s going on here (yet another reason OMD has rubbed wrong for me– all of Spider-Man’s interactions with people especially other heroes falls flat to the personal and chatty interactions of before).

While Larrocca’s usually doesn’t bother me, the writing bleeds into it and makes it an unenjoyable.  By the time I yet again see Tony Stark’s annoying little porno-tasche, I want the book to end.  The ending page of Urich’s article is well done, but that’s honestly the only thing here.  The characters here feel directed and unnatural, the actions hollow, and the pay-offs a little stale.  I really expected more of you, Fraction.  You better pick things up next issue back to the quality of before.

  1. Agreed on every point.

  2. Wow, I guess you have some good points. I enjoyed the issue, but I could sense the things you mentioned, too.  It was fun, but a little off. The OCD in me wants to just scream at the continuity issues Brand New Day has created.

  3. "I really don’t why Fraction wrote this."

Because the editors told him to, because Spider-Man and Iron Man together sell more comics than Iron Man alone.

  4. This is true, but I think Fraction could have come up with a better plot than this for a Spidey/Iron Man team-up.  This was really sub-par in comparison to the first six issues.
