Size: 32 pages
Price: 2.99

I’m going to take a break from all comics with Robert Kirkman’s name on them.  He has been consistently one of my favorite writers for the last five years.  Battle Pope and Tech Jacket weren’t really for me, but Invincible and The Walking Dead were, until recently, two of my favorite comics on the shelves.

Haunt doesn’t click with me.  I think Image United is terrible.  The Walking Dead has gotten so boring for me, that I’ve dropped it.  Invincible Returns was horrible.

There is no problem with this issue.  I did end up just skimming the las third or so of it, but that’s not due to poor writing or bad art.  I just couldn’t stop critiquing parts of this issue that shouldn’t have bothered me.  It *is* still being written well, and the art continues to be unlike anything else in comics.  But if I can’t mentally divorce the writer from his work, then I need to not read the writer for a while.  I think I’ll save all the Viltrumite War issues in my folder until it ends, and give it another read through.

Story: 4 - Very Good
Art: 5 - Excellent

  1.  sometimes you just need to take a break.  Come back fresh. I’m with you on Haunt and Image United.  I’ll be sticking to The Walking Dead and Invincible though.

  2. Yeah, things have been a bit ‘meh’ lately.  I’m confidant this will be good though.  Sometimes I think series like this and Walking Dead would’ve been better off with a specific cut off and leave the series to be celebrated instead of being drawn out.  I realize this is a superhero book, but I’ve cherished this series for quite a while now and its sad to see such low points between the moments of greatness.

  3. I’ve switched to Omnibus format.

  4. @AmirCat: Wow!  That’s a long wait.  But satisfying.  I have Ultimate INvincible #1, and it’s gorgeous.

@vadamowens: I’m definitely in full agreement on The Walking Dead.  I think Invincible could definitely go on for ages without getting boring.  Even when I’m not enjoying Kirkman’s panel to panel writing, his concepts are always evolving and mostly very entertaining.  And this series could definitely survive with another writer, if he decided to stop doing it.  And, again, I don’t think this issue is actually a low point,  I just need a break.  What I read of it was very good.

@jwaesch: It probably won’t be too long of a break for me.  My X-Men break only lasted about four months.

  5. No, but there has been low points in the series though.  That’s what I was talking about.  Earlier on, the parts after his dad left were somewhat boring to me.

  6. @vadamowens: I read it in trades until….issue 40 or so.  And have enjoyed every issue except #60 and Invincible Returns.  I can definitely see how it wouldn’t have been exciting in issues, though.

  7. I actually felt like this issue was a return to form for Invincible. This title has been consistently better than most super hero comics I buy. This book is just like Scalped or The Unwritten in that it is typically so good we can sometimes take it for granted. There have been times that I have felt let down by this title, but that is typically because I didn’t want it to stop. I wanted so badly to know what was going to happen next, that when it came to the last page I felt a sense of disappointment. I would much rather be let down by a book, because I wanted more than to be let down because the art or story was bad.

With that being said, I think I’m making this my pick of the week.
